While there are still a lot of questions regarding the field for the 2007 America East Championship, a few parts have come into focus here in the final weekend of the regular season. By virtue of their victory over UMBC in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, the Seawolves have locked up a top-two seed and will host the conference championship at sister school Farmingdale State College in Farmingdale, N.Y.
First-place Binghamton simply needs to compete in two more games to meet the 21-game conference minimum to qualify. In addition, the Bearcats will be fighting with Stony Brook for the conference's regular season title and top seed in the tournament.
By winning two of the first three against Vermont, Albany has qualified for the postseason for the second-straight season. The Great Danes will finish either third or fourth.
Maine and Vermont are vying for the final spot in the tournament. However, the Catamounts will have their work cutout for them. They must defeat Albany in tomorrow's series finale and have Binghamton sweep the four-game series with the Black Bears. All other scenarios would send the two-time defending champion Black Bears to the postseason. Binghamton and Maine have been washed away in the first two days, but are scheduled to begin the four-game series tomorrow in Orono.
The winner of the double-elimination America East Championship is awarded the league’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
America East Baseball Championship Tickets are $6 for adults and $2 for students.
