Albany Advances to Title Game Awaits Opponent

BOSTON -- Looking to capture its third-straight conference title, fourth-seeded Albany pulled off its second-straight upset, defeating No. 2 UMBC 2-0 to advance to the title game of the 2007 America East Softball Championship. The Great Danes will now have to wait and see who they will play in the finals. Hartford and UMBC are vying for the a chance at the crown, they played three scoreless innings before the game was halted due to darkness.

The Hawks and Retrievers will finish their game at 11 a.m. with the winner to move on to face Albany at 1:30 p.m.

In game one of the day, freshman Leah McIntosh tossed a two-hit shutout in leading the Great Danes to a 2-0 victory over UMBC in the second round. The game included a three-hour-and-twenty-minute rain delay. Albany, which advances to its fifth title game in the last six years, broke a scoreless tie with a pair of unearned runs in the sixth. 

In the second game of the day, No. 3 Hartford captured a 7-2 win over top-seeded Boston University. Hawk freshmen Rachel Clonick and Olivia Piacentini each drove in a pair of runs, while classmate Brittney Stratton gave up only two hits en route to the win. Stratton took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and gave up solo homers in the sixth and seventh.

The third game was halted after three scoreless innings.
