Fourth-seeded Albany upset No. 1 Boston University, 2-1, while No. 2 UMBC build an early lead and held on to defeat No. 3 Hartford, 9-5, on day one of the 2007 America East Softball Championship. Action resumes tomorrow with three games beginning at 11 a.m. at Boston University Softball Field. In game one of the day, Albany and UMBC will play with the winner to advance to the title game on Saturday.

In game one, Albany's Meagan Butsch cracked a solo home run to lead off the top of the fourth inning that broke a 1-1 tie and proved to be the difference as the fourth-seeded Great Danes earned a 2-1 win over top-seeded Boston University in the opening round of the America East Softball Championship. Albany's Casey Halloran tossed a complete-game allowing no earned runs on four hits and struck out eight.

In the second game, UMBC put eight runs in the bottom of the second and held off a late charge from Hartford to capture the 9-5 victory. UMBC's Amanda Fefel had a good day overall. Offensively, she went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, an RBI, while she also came into the circle and shutdown the Hawks for the final inning and a third en route to her first collegiate save.

Game one on Friday will pit second-seeded UMBC against No. 4 Albany at 11 a.m., while the day's second game will feature top-seeded Boston University and No. 3 Hartford at 1:30 p.m.

The league champion will earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
