Newsday Article: SBU-Hofstra the perfect rivalry

Hempstead, N.Y. - Owen Adams found the back of the cage with 1:49 remaining in overtime to lift the Seawolves to a 13-12 come from behind win at Shuart Stadium on Tuesday evening. The Seawolves rallied for three goals down on two separate occasions to move to 8-3 on the season. With the loss, the Pride falls to 6-6 on the season.

"We knew that it was going to be a battle going into the game," said head coach Rick Sowell. "I am so proud of my guys for never giving up and getting this win."

Adams fired a shot from 12 yards out into the back of the cage to complete the comeback for the Seawolves with 1:49 left in overtime. The junior midfielder sent the game into extra time as he broke free from his man and buried a shot from seven yards out with just 10 seconds remaining in regulation. The Seawolves, who trailed 12-9 with 8:38 remaining, closed out the game on a 4-0 run. Mike Palmer sparked the run when he wrapped around the cage and found the right side of the twine with 5:10 left in the contest. Rhys Duch cut the lead to one as he scooped up a bouncing ground ball in front of the cage, jumped and buried a shot from 12 yards out with 4:26 on the clock. It appeared as though the Seawolves had tied the game with 29 seconds remaining but Larry Cerasi's shot hit the post and bounced off the crossbar. After the Pride turned the ball over on the clear, Adams made no mistake as he knotted the game at 12 after a terrific dodge.

"We knew we were never out of the game," said Adams. "We have been underestimated all year but we came out and played and I am so proud of my teammates. We never stopped believing."

The Pride raced out to an early 3-1 lead with 5:04 left in the first stanza only to have a Sean Chamberlain transition goal at the 2:26 mark cut the lead to one at the end of the first period. After Tom Dooley netted his first of five goals on the afternoon 1:11 into the second half, a man-up tally from Ryan Hughes and Palmer's first tally of his career tied the game at four. The Pride responded with three unanswered goals, two from Dooley, to go up 7-4 with 4:57 left in the first half. Once again, Adams lifted the squad as his jumping bounce shot from five yards out with 2:01 remaining sliced the lead to two. Hughes scooped up a groundball off a Bo Tripodi saved shot brought SB within one with 18 seconds left in the half. Jimmy Astea won the ensuing face-off and found Duch who ripped a shot from 10 yards out that hit the twine as time expired.

After the teams traded goals coming out of halftime, Tripodi gave the Seawolves their first lead since 10:52 of the first quarter as he finished a Bobby Trenkle feed in front of the cage giving the visitors a 9-8 lead. The Pride went on to net four unanswered goals to hold a 12-9 lead before the Seawolves furious rally.

Adams finished with four goals while Hughes added a hat trick. Duch and Palmer each added a pair of goals while Bobby Trenkle finished with three assists. Brendan Callahan was outstanding in the cage as he made numerous spectacular saves and finished with 17 stops. Freshman Rob Camposa came in on a man-down situation in just his second appearance of the year and made a point-blank save.

The Seawolves wrap up their regular season at home on Saturday evening when they entertain UMBC in an America East showdown. Face-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
