Resetarits Earns Third Player of the Week Honor in Four Weeks

For the third time in four weeks, Albany's Frank Resetarits (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) has been tabbed America East Player of the Week. The senior netted four goals with one assist in the Great Danes' 10-9 overtime win against Massachusetts. He followed that up with two first-half goals against No. 19 Drexel, as the Great Danes led 8-5 at halftime. Resetarits climbed into second place on the school’s all-time goals list with 117, moving past Dave Cerny.


TEAM-BY-TEAM NOTES

ALBANY GREAT DANES
Albany (5-0, 0-0 America East) is off to its best start since 1993 following wins over Massachusetts (10-9, OT) and Drexel (16-13) last week... UMass recovered from a 7-0 deficit to force an extra period, but Merrick Thomson (Stoney Creek, Ontario / Albany Academy) scored his only goal of the game with 12 seconds elapsed in overtime... The Great Danes have won four consecutive one-goal decisions against UMass, last year’s national runner-up... UAlbany posted its third win of the season against a top-20 club in the triumph over No. 19 Drexel... sophomore Corey Small (St. Catharines, Ontario / Holy Cross) erupted for a career-high five goals, including two in the fourth quarter, in a contest that was moved to the University of Pennsylvania’s Franklin Field due to the weather... Derek Dale (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y. / Sachem) and Small converted back-to-back goals to break a 10-10 deadlock in the final period... The Great Danes, who have won 27 games by three goals or less as a Division I program, pulled away by scoring four times over a two-minute-and-34-second span... long-sticker midfielder Chris Schongar (Clifton Park, N.Y. / Shenendehowa) netted his first career goal in that run... Frank Resetarits (Hamburg, N.Y. / Hamburg) had four goals and one assist vs. Massachusetts, the 12th time he has totaled four-plus goals in his career... Resetarits moved past Dave Cerny (1983-86) into second place among the school’s all-time goals leaders with 117... Merrick Thomson is now fourth in career scoring with 186 points (141 goals, 45 assists)... goalkeeper Brett Queener (Penn Yan, N.Y. / Penn Yan Academy) recorded double-figure saves for the 14th time in his UAlbany career with 11 stops against Drexel... Jordan Levine (Bethpage, N.Y. / Bethpage) equaled season-highs in goals (3) and points (4) vs. Drexel... Levine also won the overtime face-off that led to Thomson’s game-winning goal against UMass... UAlbany was second nationally in last week’s USILA poll, the highest-ever ranking in the program’s Division I history.

HARTFORD HAWKS
Hartford (1-4, 0-0 America East) dropped a 16-4 decision at the University of Denver last week. Scoring goals for the Hawks were junior Steve Roop (Lewiston, Maine/Elmira College) and freshmen Rob Steffens (Rochester, N.H./Spaulding, Rory Finneran (Narragansett, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) and Jonathon Timkey (Rochester, N.Y./Monroe CC). Sophomore goalie Jon McMahon (Tonawanda, N.Y./Sweet Home) played all 60 minutes and finished with nine saves... Sophomore Daniel Clough (Piedmont, Calif./Dematha) leads Hartford in scoring with four goals and a team-best five assists for nine points... Steffens leads the team with six goals... Hartford will next face second-ranked Albany on Saturday, March 24 at 1 p.m.

UMBC RETRIEVERS
UMBC (3-3, 0-0 America East) dropped an 11-7 decision to tenth-ranked Maryland in chilly conditions at Byrd Stadium... The Retrievers fall to 3-3 on the season, while the Terrapins improve to 4-2... Junior midfielder Terry Kimener (Oakton, Va./Oakton) led the UMBC effort with three goals and an assist... Senior attackman Drew Westervelt (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) scored a goal and added a pair of assists, while sophomore midfielder Alex Hopmann (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) notched a pair of goals... UMBC fell behind, 2-0, but did tie the game on a late first quarter score by Hopmann and an early second quarter tally by Kimener... But the deadlock lasted less than two minutes, as Maryland would go on a 4-0 run and would eventually forge a 7-3 advantage at the half... The Terrapins outscored UMBC, 4-0 in the third quarter, but the Retrievers continued to fight and turned the tables, scoring four unanswered goals in the fourth. Westervelt made it 11-7 on a goal with 2:02 to play and UMBC had an extra-man opportunity, but two Retriever attempts were saved and the Terps won their eighth straight game over UMBC...Shots in the game were even at 29-all, as UMBC enjoyed a 15-3 margin in the fourth period... The Retrievers won 12 of 20 draws, with all the wins credited to junior Taylor Marino (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul’s)... Westervelt has moved into a tie for ninth place on UMBC’s all-time assist list with 71 helpers... He has points in 11 straight games in 48 of all 50 games he has competed in at UMBC... UMBC returns to action next Sunday when they entertain Ohio State at 1 p.m... For the second straight week, the game will be televised by ESPNU/WMAR-TV... the Retrievers lead the overall series, 3-2 ... Three of the five meetings have been decided in multiple overtimes, including the last two... UMBC won an 8-7 double-overtime decision in 2004 and the Buckeyes countered with a 10-9 win in two overtimes the following season.

STONY BROOK SEAWOLVES
Stony Brook (2-1, 0-0 America East) did not play this week as their contest against Penn State on Saturday was cancelled due to the winter storm... The Seawolves will have a pair of home games this week as they host Marist and Lehigh.

VERMONT CATAMOUNTS
Vermont (3-2, 0-0 America East) defeated Denver 9-8 last Saturday and dropped a 13-6 decision to No. 11 North Carolina last Tuesday... The win against Denver was Vermont’s first-ever against the Pioneers in four tries... Senior midfielder Pete Hein (Greenwood Village, Colo./Cherry Creek) scored five goals on the week... Hein has a team-high 12 goals and two assists for 14 points on the season... Senior Sean Layton (Wilmington, Mass./Malden Catholic) and sophomore Alex Young (Cincinnati, Ohio) each scored three goals in the victory against Denver... Layton is second on the team in points this year with 13 (9 goals, 4 assists)... Senior Adam Kornuth (Denver, Colo./East) recorded a career best four assists in the win over the Pioneers... Senior Daryl Swarts (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) made 10 saves in the win against Denver and has a .563 save percentage on the year... Both of Vermont’s losses this season have come against ranked opponent... This week The Catamounts travel to Dartmouth for a 3 p.m. game on Tuesday and then host Siena at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
