Greene, Lagala, Quiller, and Fauntleroy Open Track and Field Season with Weekly Awards

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--University of Albany's Joe Greene and University of Vermont's Carmen Lagala earned weekly honors as America East Men's and Women's Track Performers of the Week, while Binghamton University's Rory Quiller and UMBC's Ashley Fauntleroy received America East Field Performers of the Week. The conference made the announcement on Tuesday afternoon for the week ending December 3.

Junior Greene (Rochester, N.Y./Edison) won the 55m hurdles in an IC4A-qulaifying time of 7.69 seconds at Northeastern's Husky Winter Carnival on Saturday, December 1. He also ran the anchor leg of the first place 4x400-meter relay team that clocked in with an IC4A-qualifying time of 3:19.21.

Senior Lagala (Montpelier, Vt./Montpelier) started off her final season of indoor track and field competition with a record breaking performance. Lagala won the 1000 meters at the Husky Winter Track & Field Carnival hosted by Northeastern on Saturday with a time of 2:52.57, breaking the old mark of 2:53.22 set by Christina Gingras in 2004. Lagala now owns four indoor school records (500m, 600m, 800m, 1000m) and seven Vermont track and field records overall.

Senior Quiller (West Point, N.Y./James O'Neil) met the automatic qualifying standard for the NCAA Indoor Track Championships, highlighting Binghamton's performance at the season-opening Cornell Indoor Relays on Saturday. There was no team scoring at the event. Quiller, who also qualified for the NCAA Indoor Meet in 2005 and 2007, tied his own school record and broke the Cornell facility record with a jump of 18-0 1/2. He initially set the school record at last season's NCAA meet, as he earned All-America honors with a second-place finish. This year's NCAA Championship will be hosted by the University of Arkansas March 14-15.

Senior Fauntleroy (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch) led the Retrievers in their first outing of the 2007-08 indoor season on Saturday as she turned in two second-place performances at the Bucknell Bison Opener. Fauntleroy finished second in the weight throw with a career-best mark of 16.32m, while also placing second in the shot put with a mark of 14.16m, both of which are also 2008 ECAC Championships qualifying marks.

Boston U
The Boston University indoor track teams competed at the Husky Winter Track and Field Carnival at the Reggie Lewis Center Saturday, with several Terrier athletes finishing high amongst competitors. Senior Camille Hazlewood missed the first place mark in the triple jump by just 0.09m, placing second with an 11.98m distance, while freshman Rich Haigh finished eighth in the 55 meter dash with a 6.68 mark, after qualifying for the finals with a 6.65 run. Hartford
The University of Hartford men’s and women’s indoor track teams opened the season at the Wesleyan Cardinal Invitational this past weekend. The event was not team scored, however the Hawks saw individual victories on the men’s and women’s side. [Hartford Story]

Maine
The Black Bears begin their winter indoor season on December 8 when they host New Hampshire.

UMBC
The UMBC men’s and women’s track and field teams opened competition for the 2007-08 indoor track and field season on Saturday as they competed in the Bucknell Bison Opener in Lewisburg, Pa. [UMBC Story]

New Hampshire
The University of New Hampshire women's indoor track and field team used first-place finishes from freshman Allison Letourneau (Kingston, Nova Scotia) and sophomore Ashlee Lathrop (Sherburne, N.Y.), and a new school record by freshman Camille Quarles (Derry, N.H.), as part of a solid showing at the season-opening Husky Winter Carnival on Saturday at the Reggie Lewis Center. The Seawolves begin their winter indoor season on December 8 at the Fordham Quad Meet 1 in Bronx, N.Y. beginning at 3 p.m.

Vermont
