Wallace Award Release
Full listing of players
VESTAL,
N.Y. -- Binghamton baseball pitcher Jeff
Dennis (North Syracuse, N.Y.) is among the players selected
for the 2008 Brooks Wallace Player of the Year Award Watch List,
released by the College Baseball Foundation. He is the only player
from the America East Conference among the list of pre-season
candidates.
The
Wallace Award is presented to the nation's top collegiate baseball
player. The award is dedicated to the memory of the former Texas
Tech player and assistant coach Brooks Wallace, who played within
the Texas Rangers' organization before his untimely death at
age 27.
Dennis
went 4-2 with a team-best 2.62 earned run average in 2007. The
6-foot-6 lefthander ranked second in the America East in hits
allowed (45) and third in both ERA and opposing batting average
(.212), helping BU capture the regular season title with a 17-5
record. He struck out 54 in 55 innings and allowed just 12 extra-base
hits.
At
the America East Championship, Dennis pitched a gem against Albany
in the final. He struck out eight and allowed just three hits
in six innings, absorbing the tough-luck 1-0 defeat.
"This
is an outstanding and well-deserved honor for Jeff," head
coach Tim Sinicki said. "He's worked extremely hard over
the past two-plus seasons to put himself in a position to be
recognized on a national level. There is little doubt that Jeff's
emergance combined with Zach Groh returning to our number one
spot in the rotation, we will have one of the best one-two combinations
in the America East Conference and Northeast region."
Sinicki,
heading into his 16th season in 2008, will bring his Bearcats
into their season-opening series on February 23-24 at James Madison.
