UMBC Swimmers and Boston University Divers Take Weekly Awards

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--UMBC's Tina Cantwell and Brad Reitz earned weekly honors as America East Women's and Men's Swimming Performers of the Week. Boston University's Tess Waresmith and Andre Watson were named America East Women's and Men's Diving Performers of the Week. The conference made the announcement the week ending November 19.

Junior Cantwell (Sinking Spring, Pa./The Hill School) earned an NCAA B-Cut in the 200 breaststroke as she totaled three individual victories and was part of one winning Retriever relay at the Patriot Invitational last weekend. Cantwell extended her unbeaten streak in the 200 breaststroke to seven meets for the 2007-2008 season and 15 meets overall as she turned in an NCAA consideration time of 2:18.20 to win the Patriot Invitational. Cantwell has not lost the 200 breaststroke since Oct. 28, 2006, when she placed second in the event against Navy. In addition, Cantwell also added victories in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.92) and 400 IM (4:31.62) and was part of the winning 400 medley relay as the Retrievers placed second overall in at the Patriot Invitational.

Freshman Reitz (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) tallied three individual victories and was part of three relay victories as he helped the UMBC men's swimming and diving team to its second straight Patriot Invitational title last weekend. Reitz set a new Patriot Invite record in the 100 butterfly as he won with a time of 49.70, and also picked up wins in the 200 individual medley (1:52.23) and 200 butterfly (1:51.46), while finishing second in the 200 freestyle (1:42.04). In addition, Reitz was also part of the Retrievers' winning 200 medley, and 400, and 800 freestyle relays, while also taking part in the second-place 400 medley relay.

Junior Waresmith (Dover, Mass./Dover Sherborn) earned two victories and broke the school record for 21 dives in the one- and three-meter boards with scores of 559.75 and 662.80, respectively. She earned these scores at the Boston University Invitational this past weekend.

Freshman Watson (Hempstead, N.Y.) broke three records over the weekend at the Terrier Invitational. He posted a school and pool record on the one-meter with a score of 655.5 points in six dives and 688.8 in 12 dives. On the three-meter, he broke the pool and school record with a score of 611 in 12 dives.

Binghamton
Junior Brenno Varanda (St. Petersburg, Fla.) made it a perfect 4-for-4, claiming his third and fourth individual wins of the weekend on Sunday as the Bearcat men wrapped up competition at the two-day Bucknell Trials/Finals Invitational on Sunday. The Bearcats took third out of the four squads who competed in the weekend's action. With 763 points, the men finished ahead of TCNJ (289 points), while coming in behind Towson (1062) and host Bucknell (857.5). On the women's side, Binghamton totaled 289 points, finishing ahead of TCNJ (109), and trailing Towson (1294), James Madison (841), and Bucknell (722). [Binghamton Story]

Boston University
Eight top ten finishes boosted the Boston University women's swimming and diving team to third place in the final standings on the third day of the Terrier Invitational. Brigette O'Shaughnessy claimed victory in the 200 breaststroke, while Eve Kinsella, Sarah Doersam and Clara Van Allen earned two top-ten finishes apiece. [Boston Women's Story]

After the final day of competition, the Boston University men's swimming and diving team finished third out of five teams at the Terrier Invitational. Jeff Wurm provided the Terriers with a victory in the 200 back, while four different swimmers placed in the top ten in the 200 breaststroke. Maine
The University of Maine women's swimming and diving team fell to Vermont 172-128 Sunday afternoon. The loss marks the first for the Black Bears this season, now standing at 3-1, while Vermont improves their record to 5-5. [Maine Story]

New Hampshire
The University of New Hampshire women’s swimming and diving team placed fifth at the Terrier Invitational this past weekend at Boston University. [New Hampshire Story]

Stony Brook
Stony Brook men's and women's swimming and diving teams did not compete this last week. The Seawolves return to action Saturday, December 1 when they take on Boston University.

Vermont
Senior Nicole Underhill (South Burlington, Vt.) won three events to help the University of Vermont swimming and diving team down Maine 172-128 on the road on Sunday afternoon. [Vermont Story]
