BOSTON, Mass.--Eight America East schools competed in the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships on Saturday, November 10 hosted by Harvard at Franklin Park. UMBC competed in the Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships on Saturday in Bethlehem, Pa.
On the women’s side, the Stony Brook cross country team made their
presence known as they qualified for the NCAA Championships for the
first time in program history when they finished second out of 34 teams.
The Seawolves were led by Dana Hastie (Wellington, New Zealand), who
finished 14th (21:10.50) out of 254 runners on the six kilometer
course. All seven of the Seawolves’ women runners finished within the
top 50. Senior Cathy Parker (Westford, Mass.) finished eighth overall to help
the Wildcats to a 13th place team finish. She completed the course in
20:57.30 and was the only competitor in the America East Conference to
qualify as an individual for the NCAA Women’s Cross Country National
Championships
Boston
University took ninth, senior Andrea Walkonen (Jaffrey, N.H./Conant)
finished 10th for the women’s side (21:01.35). Binghamton placed 16th
as freshman Ashley Horton ( Candor, N.Y./ Candor) was the top finisher
for the women in a 22:10, good for 58th place. The University of Maine
finished 20th with Elonnai Hickok (Rutledge, Pa./Strath Haven) being
the first Black Bear to cross the line for a 66th place finish in a
time of 22:15.85. University of Vermont earned a 30th place team finish
with freshman Hannad Masse (Fitchburg, Mass.) leading the way in a time
of 23:33.50 for a 146th place finish. University at Albany’s Laura
Cummings (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore-University of North Carolina) was
the first of three Great Danes to finish, doing so with the 42nd best
time of 21:49.30. Hartford rounded out the field with Stefanie Lombardi
(North Providence, R.I./North Providence) leading the Hawks with a time
of 23:01.15 and placing 114th overall.
In
the Mid-Atlantic Region, Alex Hyland (Toms River, N.J./Toms River
South) ran a blistering 5:33 pace to finish with a time of 20:38 for
the 6K race, good for 13th place out of 198 runners.
The
Stony Brook women's cross country team broke into the Division I
women's poll this week when they were announced at number 27 on the
NCAA Division I women's cross country rankings. The lady Seawolves and
New Hampshire’s Cathy Parker will travel to Indiana State University
(Terre Haute, Ind.) for the NCAA Cross Country National Championships
on November 19.
In the men’s race Stony Brook’s cross country team earned an eighth-place team finish out of 34 teams. Senior Shaun Krawitz (Auckland, New Zealand) led the way for the Seawolves finishing 16th with a time of 30:22.10 in the 10 kilometer course. Krawitz missed individually qualifying for the NCAA Championships by just one spot. The New Hampshire men’s cross country team took 14th as senior Robert Edgerton (Cornish, N.H.) finished 30th overall with a time of 30:47.45. Boston University was the next America East team to finish, placing 15th. Senior David Proctor (United Kingdom/Hulme Grammar School) crossed first for the Terrier men with a 50th place finish (31:11.90). Binghamton University earned a 21st place team finish as freshman Andrew Ugolino (West Hurley, N.Y.) was the first Bearcat to finish 102nd in a time of 32:09. University of Maine placed 23rd led by Christopher Harmon (Scarborough, Maine) who was only two seconds behind Ugolino (32:11.00) for a 104th place finish. Hartford’s only male runner to qualify for this event was Jonas Hampton (
Pottstown,
Pa./Pottsgrove) placing 192nd overall and posting a time of 34:09.25. University at Albany’s Ricardo Estremera (San Juan, Puerto Rico/University) placed 41st in 31:02.00 as one of two Great Danes to qualify and compete. Rounding out the field was University of Vermont’s Doug Maisey (Gwynedd Valley, Pa./Wissahickon) who led a pair of Catamount men with a time of 31:47.65, good for 84th.
In the Mid-Atlantic Region, junior Anthony Kelhower (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) led UMBC across the line dropping over a minute from his personal-best time to finish with a time of 31:23 in the 10K race in 41st place. The Retrievers finished 19th as a team out of 28 teams.
