BURLINGTON, Vt. - University of Vermont head women's basketball coach Sharon Dawley has been named to the board of directors for the Northern Vermont Chapter of the American Red Cross this month.

"Sharon spends her days working closely with young people so, in addition to her established leadership skills, she will offer us a unique and very positive perspective on the issues we deal with as a board", said Don Martin Chairman of the chapters board of directors.

"I'm really excited to be a part of such an amazing organization that does so much good work in the community. It's a great opportunity for the women's basketball program and the athletic department to contribute to the community," said Dawley.

The Northern Vermont Chapter of the American Red Cross serves the eight northern counties of the state spanning some 5,000 square miles and it's mission is to help people prevent, prepare, respond to and recover from emergencies of all types. Last year the Northern Vermont Chapter responded to over 100 incidents across the region and also trained some 13,000 Vermonters in life saving skills such as CPR, first aid and aquatics.

Dawley was nominated to a three year term on the Northern Vermont Chapter of the American Red Cross. The Red Cross is a volunteer organization and the board of directors provide governance oversight to chapter operations.

Junior Sarah Madey (Derby Line, Vt.), a co-captain of the women's basketball team and student in the school of business at UVM, is serving as a business intern in the executive director's office.

The Catamounts are off to a 1-1 start and play host to the 14th annual TD Banknorth Classic on Saturday (Nov. 17) and Sunday (Nov. 18). Vermont faces Brown at 12:30pm on Saturday and NC State battles St. John's at 2:30pm. The consolation and championship games will be held at 12:30pm and 2:30pm, respectively, on Sunday. Tickets to the tournament can be purchased online at www.uvmathletics.com or by calling the UVM Athletic Ticket Office at 802-656-4410.
