CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-- With a game-high 24 points against #13 George Washington in the UMBC season opener Friday night, sophomore guard Carlee Cassidy captured the season's first America East Women's Basketball Player of the Week Award. Maine's freshman guard Tanna Ross, the Rookie of the Week, put up 14 points in her first collegiate game against Clemson, also on Friday night. Click here for PDF release.
UMBC's sophomore guard Carlee Cassidy (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) put up career numbers en route to capturing the season's first conference player of the week. Against 13th-ranked George Washington on Friday night, Cassidy put up personal bests of 24 points, six rebounds, three assists, and 9-for-9 free throw shooting to become the America East Player of the Game. She bested her previous career high in the second half alone with 18 points, including 15 of the Retrievers' final 19 points of the game. Against Rider two days later, the sophomore scored 12 points in her limited time on the court (28 minutes) due to having four fouls. She hit all four of her free throws to bring her season total to a perfect 13-for-13. On the weekend, Cassidy averaged 18.0 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 43.5% shooting, and two steals.
Maine's freshman guard Tanna Ross (Newburgh, Maine/Hampden Academy) received this week's Rookie of the Week Award. Ross scored a game-high 14 points in her collegiate debut in a 72-59 loss at ACC-foe Clemson on Friday night. In addition, the rookie recorded seven rebounds and three assists. Ross was an first-team all-conference and all-state selection as a senior in Maine last year, and was her conference's player of the year as a sophomore.

The Saints gave the Terriers a scare with a 16-2 run in the second half, but 18-point performances by senior Kasey Devine and junior Jesyka Burks-Wiley lifted Boston U. to the season-opening victory.
at Portland State 62, Binghamton
In a late, West Coast start time, Binghamton's Laine Kurpnience netted 22 points, the most by a Bearcat in a season opener since the program went Division I in 2001... The Bearcats overcame an 11-point deficit faced in the first half, but eventually fell in the waning seconds of the game.

The Seawolves gave Michele Cherry a win in her head coaching debut... senior Aly Young led all scorers with 13 points, while preseason all-conference honoree Dana Ferraro brought down a game-high 16 rebounds.... Jodie Pikus contributed 11 points off the bench.

The Great Danes had a 45-37 lead in the second half, but couldn't hold on against Indiana... seniors Gia Sanders and Kristin Higy each put up a team-highs of 14 points and 10 rebounds.

A second win in as many years over the Tigers wasn't in the stars for the Black Bears this season... Freshman Tanna Ross notched a game-high 14 points and sophomore forward Brittany Boser earned her first career double-double (10 pts, 10 reb).

A pair of free throws by UMass' Sakera Young with four seconds left was the difference between the win and the loss for the Catamounts... Four Catamounts hit double-digit points.
