Boston, Mass. -
The Stony Brook women's cross country team qualified for the NCAA
Championships for the first time in program history when they finished
2nd overall at the Northeast Regional in Boston, Mass. Saturday.
The women were led by senior Dana Hastie (Wellington, New Zealand), who finished 14th (21:10.50) out of 254 runners.
"She dragged this team to the NCAA Championships on her back today," said coach Andy Ronan. "I've never seen her give as much effort in a race as she did today."
Sophomore Laura Huet (Carrickmines, Ireland) was just three spots behind Hastie, finishing 17th (21:17.60), while freshman Lucy van Dalen (Wanganui, New Zealand), freshman Holly Van Dalen (Wanganui, New Zealand) and sophomore Jessica Hampson (Smithtown, N.Y.) crossed in a pack, finishing 28th, 29th, and 30th respectively.
"Considering the situation, our underclassmen did an outstanding job of keeping their heads," said Ronan.
All seven of the Seawolves' women runners finished within the top 50, with senior Kerry Salzano (Staten Island, N.Y.) finishing 33rd and senior Elizabeth Carlson (Lincoln, R.I.) crossing 48th.
The women's team will travel to Indiana State University (Terre
Haute, Ind.) on November 19th to compete at the NCAA Championships.
The men's cross country also set a team best by finishing 8th overall.
Senior Shaun Krawitz
(Aukland, New Zealand) set the pace for the Seawolves finishing 16th
(30:22.10). Krawitz missed individually qualifying for the NCAA
Championships by just one spot.
He was followed by sophomore Alex Felce (Stroud, England) who crossed 31st, freshman Tim Hodge (Tawa, New Zealand) who finished 32nd, junior Zach Tyerman (Seattle, Wash.) who finished 90th, and sophomore Daire Bermingham (Portmarnock, Ireland) who crossed 104th.
