Boston University Sweeps Men's Soccer Weekly Awards

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-- Boston University's Neil Hlavaty (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East) was tabbed the America East Men's Soccer Player of the Week after scoring the game-winning goal over UMBC on Saturday. Teammate Aaron O'Neal garnered Rookie of the Week honors for the week ending October 28. Click here for complete release.

Hlavaty scored the game-winning goal in the Terriers’ 2-1 win over conference-leading UMBC on Saturday. Hlavaty, who has 12 points on three goals and six assists this season, scored off a free kick 11:30 into the second half. The win helped Boston U. leap over the Retrievers in the conference standings with two games to play in the regular season.

O’Neal scored the game-tying goal in the Terriers’ 1-1 double-overtime deadlock with Hartford on Wednesday. He also had an assist in his team’s 2-1 victory over UMBC on Saturday. O'Neal leads Boston U. in point (16) and goals (8).

Team Notebooks

Albany (2-10-3, 1-3-2 America East) went 0-2 in two road games last week... The Great Danes lost to Stony Brook, 1-0, on Wednesday, Oct. 24... The Seawolves tallied the game’s lone goal in the 59th minute for the win... Junior goalkeeper Steward Ceus (West Haverstraw, N.Y./North Rockland) registered five saves in the match for the Great Danes... UAlbany was outshot by Stony Brook 13-9 in the contest, including 6-2 in the decisive second half... On Saturday, Oct. 27, the Great Danes had their winless streak extended to five with a 3-0 loss at Binghamton... The Bearcats scored what would stand to be the game-winner in the 16th minute on a cross into the penalty box... Binghamton converted a penalty kick in the 20th minute and added an insurance goal in the 89th minute for the victory... UAlbany returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 31 against Maine at 2 p.m. and closes out its regular season at home against Hartford on Sunday, Nov. 4 with a 2 p.m. start.

Binghamton (12-4-0, 4-2-0 America East) earned its 12th win of the season last week, tying the 2003 and 2005 school record for the most Division I wins in a season. The last year Binghamton won more than 12 games in a season came in in 1993, when the then-Colonials finished 14-6-1 at the NCAA Division III level ... sophomore forward Cameron Keith (Aberdeenshire, Scotland/Aberdeen Univ.) had a goal and an assist, leading Binghamton to a 3-0 win over Albany on Saturday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex. Keith now leads the America East with 10 goals and 22 points. He is the first Bearcat to score 10 goals in a season since Charles Darkwah netted a conference-best 12 goals during the 2004 season.

Boston University (9-5-2, 3-1-2 America East) is unbeaten in its last six games after tying Hartford, 1-1, and defeating then-conference leading UMBC, 2-1, last week... The Terriers have not lost since Oct. 6, a 2-1 overtime defeat at the hands of Binghamton... On Wednesday, Oct. 24, BU traveled to West Hartford, Conn.... Hartford scored first, in the 11th minute, and that goal stood until the 84th when freshman forward Aaron O’Neal (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam HS) scored his team-leading sixth goal of the year to knot the score at 1-1... In the win over UMBC, BU scored the first two goals of the game to put it away... Sophomore forward Shaun Taylor (Sandown, England/Sandown HS) received a pass from O’Neal at 12:55, and junior midfielder Neil Hlavaty (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East HS) scored on his own direct kick in the 56th minute for the game winner... The win over UMBC combined with Binghamton’s win over Albany moved the Terriers into second place in the league... BU wraps up the regular season with a home contest against New Hampshire at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31 and a 1 p.m. start at Vermont on Saturday, Nov. 3.

Hartford (6-4-5, 1-1-4 America East) played a pair of 1-1 ties, both in conference play this past week. The Hawks opened the week with Boston University at Al-Marzook Field. The Hawks scored first in the 12th minute when Andreas Blamo (Monrovia, Liberia/Hall/Manchester CC) found Oswald Adu (Toronto, Ontario/C.W.Jefferys/Nyack College) in the middle of the box after chipping through the BU defense. The goal was Adu’s second of the season. The Terriers then capitalized in the 85th minute when Aaron O’Neal scored off a free kick that was batted around in the box. The Hawks second 1-1 tie came against New Hampshire on the road. The Hawks again struck first, scoring in the 24th minute. Daniel Antunez (Flint, Texas/Santa Ana/Lon Morris) scored his third goal of the season off a pass from Gary Muir (Glasgow, Scotland/Louisburg). Antunez scored to the left of the net, while UNH’s keeper dove right. The Hawks again allowed a second half goal from their opponents win the 62nd minute. Over the two games, Matt Glaeser (Fredericksburg, Va./James Monroe/James Madison) finished with 11 saves, seven of which came against New Hampshire. The Hawks will close out the regular season with a home game on Wednesday night and the season finale at Albany on Sunday. Hartford welcomes UMBC to Al-Marzook Field on Wednesday for the home finale. Prior to the game, The Hawks will honor their 10 seniors.

Maine (3-12-1, 1-5-1 America East) dropped a pair of home games on the week to Vermont and Stony Brook... They were the first home losses of the season for the Black Bears who finished 3-2-1 at home in 2007... The Maine men's soccer team recently teamed up with Futbol for Change, a non-profit organization to help children in Ghana... The goals of the organization including providing a soccer academy in Ghana and helping to uplift the standard of living for children there... Maine head coach Pat Laughlin was recently named the Region 1 U15 Boys Team Head Coach... Region 1 stretches from Maine to Virginia and is a part of US Youth Soccer's Olympic Development Program... Laughlin has served as an assistant coach with Region 1 the past five years.. Before the game with Stony Brook on Saturday Maine honored seniors Kiaran McCormack (Dundalk, Ireland/UVM), Dan Eggert (Allegany, N.Y./Allegany-Limestone), Pat Halligan (Falmouth, Maine/UConn), Jimmy Velas (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth), Marshall Holmes (Albion, Maine/Lawrence), Giacomo Brunini (Concord, Ontario/UMaine Machias) and Ben Piotrowski (Colchester, Vt./Colchester)... Maine closes out the season on Wednesday, Oct. 31 when it travels to Albany for a 2 p.m. game.

UMBC (8-5-3, 3-2-1 America East) entered the week tied for second in the nation in shutout percentage and then posted their tenth shutout of the season in a 4-0 win at Howard on Tuesday... UMBC had only allowed one goal in a six-game span and that occurred in overtime at Binghamton... freshman midfielder Sean Rothe (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) got the only goal UMBC would need vs. Howard on one of the more spectacular UMBC goals of the season... he volleyed an attempted clear into the right corner of the Bison net from 25 yards away... junior midfielder Kevin Gnatiko (Montgomery Village, Md./Watkins Mill), freshman forward B.J. Quigley (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) and sophomore back Matt Ward (Glen Arm, Md./Archbishop Curley) scored second half goals as UMBC matched its season high output in goals... UMBC dropped a 2-1 decision at Boston University on Saturday, ending the Retrievers’ four-game unbeaten streak... the Retreivers allowed a first half goal for the first time in conference play this season and the for the first time since Lehigh scored three first half goals on Sept. 19 (nine games)... Gnatiko scored his third goal of the season and tenth of his career in the 86th minute to cut the deficit to 2-1, but the Retrievers could not complete the climb out of the 2-0 hole... UMBC has 10 shutouts on the season after recording none last year... Boston University’s first half goal broke the Retrievers’ streak at 383 consecutive scoreless minutes... UMBC was ranked ninth in the country in goals against average (now at 0.60 per game) entering play last week... Junior goalkeeper Steve King (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) entered last week 10th in the nation in save percentage (now 85.9%, ten goals allowed and 61 saves) and 11th with a 0.548 goals against average... After recording zero shutouts while playing every minute of the 2006 season, King has nine solo shutouts to his credit this year... His 17 career whitewashes are third on the UMBC all-time list and his 168 saves are now eighth on UMBC’s all-time list... UMBC concludes the regular season at Hartford on Wednesday and at home vs. UNH on Saturday... the Retrievers are 4-0 vs. Hartford in America East play and 2-2 (2-0 at home) vs. the Wildcats.

New Hampshire (5-4-6, 2-1-3 America East) picked up a win and a tie as they finished up regular-season home games this week ... Sophomore forward Chris Banks (Westborough, Mass./Westborough) chipped home his second goal of the season to lift UNH past Binghamton, 1-0, Wednesday evening ... After a scoreless first half of action, junior midfielder A.J. DuBois (Acworth, N.H./Fall Mountain Regional) played the ball far ahead of himself towards the left corner ... Banks retrieved the ball and chipped a shot over Binghamton goalkeeper ... Senior goalkeeper Mike Jenne (Vernon, N.Y./Whitesboro Central) finished the game with four saves to earn his seventh shutout of the season ... In the second game of the week the Wildcats battled back in the second half of action to even the score for a 1-1 with Hartford on Sunday afternoon ... A Wildcat indirect free kick, saw Kyle Urso (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East) tap the ball to junior back Mike McKee (Newton, Pa./Council Rock North), whose hard shot deflected off a defender to the left of the box .... John Bergqvist (Hollviken, Sweeden/Soderskitts) got the rebound in the air and headed the ball past Hartford goalkeeper, for his first goal of the season ... The Hawks goal was the first goal given up by Jenne, who he finished the game with three saves, since Oct. 10 against the University of Vermont, ... The Wildcats wrap-up action this week with games against Boston U. and UMBC.

Stony Brook (9-6-2, 3-3-1 America East) picked up two key America East conference victories last week. In the 1-0 win over in-state rival Albany, Maurice Brown (Clarendon, Jamaica/Francis Lewis) scored a goal in the 59th minute off a scramble in front to lift Stony Brook to victory. In the 1-0 win over Maine, Mladen Ramic (Belgrade, Serbia/High School for Tourism) had a throw-in that was headed in by a Maine defender into its own goal. Stony Brook is home for the final two games. It hosts Yale in non-conference action on Wednesday night before hosting Binghamton for Senior Night on Saturday afternoon.


Vermont (5-9-2, 2-2-2 America East) blanked Maine, 2-0, last Wednesday in its lone action of the week ... With eight points, Vermont is in sixth place with two games to go in the regular season ... Lee Stephane Kouadio (Woodlyn, Pa./Ridley) and Loren Hill (Eugene, Ore./Sheldon/Oregon State) scored second half goals in the win over the Black Bears ... Kouadio’s game-winner was his first of the season ... Junior goalkeeper Roger Scully (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) led the Cats defensive effort against Maine recording his third straight shutout and his fifth of the season ... Scully lowered his goals against average to 0.76 with the clean sheet ... The UVM defense has allowed just one goal in the last 466 minutes over five games, all against America East opponents ... Vermont hosts Binghamton Wednesday at 2:00pm and Boston University Saturday at 1:00pm to wrap up the regular season ... The Catamount seniors, Justin Geibel (Boxford, Mass./Masconomet Regional), Panos Georgiadis (Morrisville, Vt./Peoples Academy/St. Lawrence), Tyler Hasman (Portland, Ore./Lincoln/Yavapai JC) and Loren Hill will be honored prior to Saturday’s game.
