CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-- Now several weeks into the season and with non-conference schedules near completion, America East teams have stood their ground in the national and regional fall sports polls.
The Bearcats (7-2-0) captured a huge men's soccer win with a 3-0 defeat of Cornell at the new $5 million Bearcat Sports Complex and moved up one spot from last week to seventh in the Northeast region. A record 1,862 fans were in attendance to watch the two regionally-ranked teams clash. Binghamton is also receiving votes in the national NSCAA poll. With a 1-0 win over Rhode Island, Hartford (5-1-1) bumped into the Northeast's elite as well at the ten spot.
In women's soccer, Stony Brook's (4-2-3) five-game unbeaten streak lands them in Soccer Buzz's Northeast rankings at number 11. Boston University (4-5-1) is ranked 14th in the Northeast by Soccerbuzz after it split a pair of 1-0 decisions last week (loss at Yale, win vs. Vermont).
The Stony Brook women are receiving votes in the national cross country poll after a fifth-place finish in the 47-team Paul Short Invitational in Bethlehem, Pa. The Seawolves are also ranked third in the Northeast region, along with New Hampshire at 11th and Boston University at 12th. On the men's side, UNH raced to a top place finish in the Murray Keatings Invitational at the University of Maine over the weekend. The Wildcats improved to eighth in the region for their efforts.
The NFHCA/STX National Division I field hockey poll ranked the Terriers (9-3) 14th for the second consecutive week, while Albany (9-3) inched up a step to 16th. Both squads picked up conference wins in their America East openers over the weekend. Vermont (8-4), winner of a 3-1 contest against Harvard in its lone game of the week, is still receiving votes for the sixth consecutive week.
