In a back-and-forth battle, UMBC defeated Albany, 3-2, on Friday afternoon. The Retrievers move to 4-1 in conference play and into first place, while the Great Danes drop to 3-2. In other Friday volleyball match-ups, Maine defeated Hartford, 3-0, and Stony Brook edged New Hampshire in Durham, 3-2. The #13 Terriers field hockey team remained perfect in league action with a 1-0 win over the Black Bears in Orono Friday evening. Junior Holly Wiles scored the lone goal in the game. Earlier in the afternoon, Fairfield traveled to Loudonville looking for their third win of the season, but fell to Siena, in another 1-0 result. On Saturday, New Hampshire and Vermont square off in Burlington. This match-up between 1-1 teams could prove crucial in the seeding for the America East championship, being the difference between the three and four seeds in a four-team tournament. #17 Albany also takes on Cornell on the road on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Fairfield, Maine and Boston University each play non-conference tilts on Sunday.
New Hampshire men's soccer visits Albany at 1 p.m. and Maine treks to Baltimore to take on UMBC also at 1 p.m. Big Ten foe Penn State visits Boston to play the Terriers at 2 p.m. Last year, the Nittany Lions and the Terriers played to a double overtime 1-1 draw in the final of the Penn State Classic on September 10. This will be PSU's first-ever trip to Nickerson Field. Hartford will look for their first AE win against 2-0-0 Binghamton in Connecticut at 6 p.m. To close the day of action, the Catamounts square off with the Seawolves in Stony Brook at 7 p.m.
All four women's conference games will be played on Sunday. The Terriers look to remain unbeaten in the conference when they host UMBC at 1 p.m. Also at 1 p.m., New Hampshire plays Vermont in Burlington, and Albany visits in-state rival Stony Brook. Maine, which suffered its first AE loss at the hands of Boston University on Thursday, take on Hartford on the road at 2 p.m.
In cross country, Albany will host the 41st annual UAlbany Invitational on Saturday as part of the Great Danes' homecoming weekend. Binghamton will also race in that meet, while UMBC will compete in the William and Mary Tribe Invitational on Saturday. Vermont will travel across city lines to the Saint Michael's Invitational, a meet which the Catamounts have won in three of the last four years on the women's side. To kick off the weekend, New Hampshire will race in the Penn State National Invitational on Friday. The Terriers, who swept the men's and women's performers of the week as announced on Tuesday, will compete at the Pre-Nationals on the LaVern Gibson Course in Terre Haute, Indiana over the weekend. The race serves as a first-look at the same course that the NCAA National meet will be run.
