Binghamton Advances to Women's Soccer Championship

Vestal, N.Y. ? The University of Binghamton women’s soccer team defeated the Northeastern University Friday afternoon at the Events Center to advance to the finals of the 2004 America East Championship.

Binghamton’s Kelly Burnham put the Bearcats on the board early in the first half (5:30), scoring the games first goal with an unassisted finish past Northeastern goalkeeper Mariel Wilner.

The Bearcats struck again three minutes into the second half, as senior Tatiana Mathelier made it 2-0 at 48:26, scoring off a pass from fellow classmate Caitlin O’Shaughnessy. Sophomore Danielle White netted the games final goal at 87:28, finishing off a pass from senior Deli Plourde.

Binghamton’s sophomore goalie Kristie Bowers picked up the shutout in goal, recording eight saves in the process. The shutout was the sixth of the season for Bowers and the first in postseason history for the Bearcats.

The Bearcats advances to the conference finals for the first time in school history and will play the winner of the No. 2/3 semifinal game on Sunday at noon. Binghamton improves to 13-5-2 on the season. Northeasterns’s season comes to an end with a final mark of 12-7-2. The America East champion earns the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Women’s Soccer Championships.
