Boston, Mass. ? Northeastern’s Jessie Haidamaka netted the game-winning goal in double overtime to lift the No. 5 seeded Huskies past No. 4 Boston University, 1-0, in the first round of the 2004 America East Women’s Soccer Championship. NU advances to take on top-seed Binghamton University on Friday in Vestal, N.Y. at 11 a.m.

The Terriers dominated nearly the entire contest as they out-shot the Huskies 15-4 and attempted five more corner kicks (7-2) than their cross-town rival. Boston University’s starting goalie Stephanie Dreyer was lifted after the first half of play and Christina Reuter entered in goal for the home team.

The game’s lone goal came at the 107:40 mark as Haidamaka took a pass from teammate Jessica Pfeifer and fired it on net at Boston U. net-minder Reuter. It appeared as if Reuter was going to make a great save as she got a hand on the ball, but the deflection led the ball into the net enabling the Huskies to move on in the conference tournament.

With No. 3 New Hampshire topping No. 6 Hartford 4-0 earlier in the day, America East will have a different conference champion for the first time since 1996, when former league member Towson took home the hardware. Boston University and Hartford have combined to win the last seven league titles with the Terriers winning three and the Hawks four. None of the remaining teams in the six-team tournament have ever won the conference crown.

The America East champion earns the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Women’s Soccer Championships.
