Morgan Sweany (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley) of Stony Brook has garnered America East Player of the Week accolades for the second time this season, while UMBC freshman Ashley Oscars (Bakersfield, Calif./Liberty) has earned America East Rookie of the Week honors for the third-consecutive week and Stony Brook's Kaitlyn Deutsch (St. Louis, Mo./Southern Miss) has been selected America East Setter of the Week for the first time in her career. The awards were announced on Monday (September 25).
Sweany led the Seawolves to a 2-1 week and a second place finish in the Red Flash Invitational. In three matches, she totaled an impressive 60 kills and 58 digs. After averaging 4.62 kills per game over the week, Sweany now ranks second in the America East with 4.33 kills per game. After putting in three double-doubles last week, Sweany now has nine double-doubles on the year. Against St. Francis in the tournament’s opening match, Sweany tallied over 20 kills for the second straight match as the junior rattled off 24 kills and added 24 digs. In the match against Princeton, Sweany totaled over 20 digs for the third match in a row. Sweny blasted 24 kills and added 24 digs in the loss. To wrap up the weekend, Sweany managed 12 kills and 10 digs for her fourth consecutive double-double as she led Stony Brook to the sweep of Coppin State. For her impressive run at the Red Flash Invitational, Sweany was named to the all-tournament team.
Oscars tallied her best match to date this season in UMBC’s lone contest on the week as the rookie outside hitter tallied 4.80 kills per game and a .407 hitting percentage in a five-set loss to Morgan State. Oscars recorded 24 kills on 54 attacks with just two errors. She added a service ace, six digs and a solo block in the match, scoring 26 points. Oscars’ 24 kills, 26 points and .407 hitting percentage are career highs for the rookie as she has double-figure kills in her last eight matches. Oscars is averaging for the season 4.00 kpg, 4.47 ppg and 1.47 dpg.
Deutsch continued to pass consistently for the Seawolves, totaling 169 assists in three matches last week. She averaged 13.00 per game over the three-match span as she helped the Seawolves to a 2-1 week and a second-place finish at the Red Flash Invitational. In the win over St. Francis, the junior from St. Louis, Missouri totaled a career-high 68 assists. In the tough loss to Princeton, Deutsch tallied over 60 assists for the third match in a row. On the season Deutsch is averaging 11.33 assists per game and has 714 assists to only eight ball handling errors.
