Boston University's Pam Spuehler (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) has been named America East Player of the Week in field hockey for the first time this season, while freshman goalkeeper Kristen Heavens (Harwinton, Conn./Lewis Mills) of Vermont garners America East Rookie of the Week accolades for the first time in her collegiate career. The awards were announced Monday (September 25).
Spuehler was instrumental in the Terriers’ two important home wins, using a tremendous effort on both ends of the field to help Boston U. remain a perfect 4-0 at home. The junior turned the tides against No. 7 Virginia when she turned in a fantastic individual effort in the 52nd minute to knot the score at 1-1. She collected a ball outside the 25-yard line and dribbled through a trio of defenders before slotting a shot to the far corner of the cage from eight yards out.
In only her second career appearance for the Catamounts, Heavens improved to 2-0 in a 3-2 victory on the road over Syracuse on Sunday. She made 11 saves in the victory which included holding off a comeback effort by the Orange who out shot Vermont 10-1 in the second half of the contest. Heavens has given up only two goals in her two career starts, has 15 saves and a .882 save percentage.
