Albany's Allstadt, Boston University's Ryan Named America East Scholar-Athletes of the Year

University at Albany’s Andy Allstadt (track & field) and Boston University’s Marisa Ryan (cross country/track & field) have been named the 2005-06 America East Men’s and Women’s Scholar-Athletes of the Year, respectively.

Allstadt, a post graduate student with a 3.94 grade-point average in biodiversity, conservation & policy, captured the individual crown in the 3,000- and 5,000-meter runs at the America East Indoor Track & Field Championship. For his efforts, Allstadt was honored at the indoor championship as the 2006 America East Track Performer of the Year and the Coaches’ Award recipient. During the conference’s outdoor championship, Allstadt took home top honors in the 10,000-meter run for the third time. He was recently tabbed the UAlbany Presidential Scholar-Athlete Award winner and was a 2006 CoSIDA First-Team All-District Academic All-America selection. A three-time America East Track & Field Scholar Athlete of the Year, Allstadt won the 3,000-meter run at Yale’s Lidlifter Invitational and finished first in the 5,000-meter run at the Great Dane Classic.

A senior with a 3.77 grade-point average, Ryan is enrolled in Boston University’s extremely competitive accelerated medical program, through which she will complete her bachelor’s degree and medical degree in seven years by overlapping the two programs. She finished second at the America East Cross Country Championship last fall and last winter she finished first in the 3000-meter run at the America East Indoor Track & Field Championship in conference record-setting time. In addition, the Farmington, Conn. native was an ESPN the Magazine Academic All District Team selection in the spring and also has earned the Commissioner’s Honor Roll in every semester of enrollment.

Allstadt and Ryan were chosen from the 22 America East Scholar-Athletes named in July. Those 22 recipients were chosen from the nearly 3,500 student-athletes at America East institutions, including more than 1,800 student-athletes with grade-point averages 3.0 or higher in 2005-06.
