America East Cites Over 1,100 Student-Athletes for Honor Roll, 16 Scholar-Athletes

BOSTON — A total of 1175 student-athletes have been named to the 2005-06 America East Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll for earning grade-point averages of 3.0 or higher, including America East Scholar-Athletes Brendon Hitchcock (Binghamton baseball), Martin Klimes (Vermont men’s basketball), Jessica Smith (Stony Brook women’s basketball), Jeff Wolniewicz (Binghamton men’s golf), Juliana Carrillo (Hartford women’s golf), Kevin McKeown (Binghamton men’s lacrosse), Marrisa Trachtenberg (Stony Brook women’s lacrosse), Brittany Cheney (Maine softball), Brian Koizim (Binghamton men’s swimming & diving), Lidija Breznikar (Boston U. women’s swimming & diving), Tal Meir (Stony Brook men’s tennis), Lya Kushnirovich (Binghamton women’s tennis), Andy Allstadt (Albany men’s indoor track & field), Marisa Ryan (Boston U. women’s indoor track & field), Adam Grossman (UMBC men’s outdoor track & field) and Alyssa Lotmore (Albany women’s outdoor track & field).

Of that total, 497 student-athletes were named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll, acknowledging grade-point averages of 3.5 or higher during the most recent athletic season. These student-athletes join 541 student-athletes, including 261 with grade-point averages of 3.5 better, named to the America East Fall Academic Honor Roll, giving the conference more than 1,800 student-athletes with grade-point averages above 3.0 in the 2005-06 academic year.

Binghamton had the most representatives named to the Academic Honor Roll as 154 Bearcat student-athletes were selected. Vermont (145), Maine (140), Stony Brook (139) and UMBC (130) rounded out the top five. New Hampshire (127), Albany (120) and Boston U. (120) were separated by just seven student-athletes, while Hartford boasts an even 100. The New Hampshire women’s track & field team amassed 42 student-athletes on the Academic Honor Roll, the highest total of all institutional sports.

Maine featured 69 student-athletes named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll to lead all institutions. Vermont (68), Binghamton (62), Albany (58) and UMBC (58) were others well-represented by student-athletes with grade-point averages of 3.5 or better. The Maine women’s swimming & diving squad had 18 student-athletes on Commissioner’s Honor Roll, the highest total of all institutional sports.

The student-athletes were members of teams in the 16 championship sports which America East offered in the winter and spring seasons including men's and women's basketball, men's and women's swimming and diving, men's and women's track and field (both indoor and outdoor), men's and women's tennis, men's and women's golf, men's and women's lacrosse, softball and baseball. Member institutions of America East Conference for the 2005-06 winter/spring season included University at Albany, Binghamton University, Boston University, University of Hartford, University of Maine, University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), University of New Hampshire, Stony Brook University and University of Vermont.

The scholar-athletes were selected by a committee of athletic administrators and NCAA Faculty Athletics Representatives that chose an honoree in each of the 16 winter/spring championship sports. Each honoree was a starter or prominent reserve and carries a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.20.

Maine had the highest percentage of student-athletes named to the Academic Honor Roll as 140 of its 233 student-athletes (60.09 percent) in winter/spring sports received that distinction. Hartford (54.64), Vermont (53.93), New Hampshire (52.48), Binghamton (51.68) and Stony Brook (50.92) were other schools with more than half their student-athletes named to the Academic Honor Roll.

Hitchcock, a SUNY Chancellor Scholar-Athlete, was named to the America East Spring All-Academic Team, CoSIDA Academic All-District squad and was a member of Binghamton’s accounting team that placed second in country in national competition. On the field, the junior was named first team all-conference for the second-straight season and led the Bearcats in batting average (.363) and runs batted in (46) and is already Binghamton’s career leader (Division I) in hits, RBI and average heading into senior season.

Klimes was selected to the first America East Men’s Basketball All-Academic Team and was also honored as a NACDA National Scholar-Athlete and a member of the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District I Team. The junior is a four-time member of America East Academic Honor Roll and is a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma national business honor society. For the second straight season, Klimes started at center for UVM and helped lead the sixth-seeded Catamounts to their fourth-straight trip to the America East Men’s Basketball Championship game. Klimes was named to the America East All-Conference Third Team, the America East All-Defensive Team and the America East All-Championship Team.

Smith, a three-time member of the America East Winter/Spring Honor Roll, was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District I second team for the second-straight season and to the inaugural America East Women's Basketball All-Academic Team. As a player for the Seawolves, the junior is a three-time America East All-Conference selection and enters 2006-07 season ranking second among active players in America East with 1,229 career points, which is good for 47th all-time in the league.

Wolniewicz, a SUNY Chancellor Scholar-Athlete, was a member of the America East Golf All-Academic Team. He helped lead the Binghamton men's golf team to its third NCAA bid in the last five years and was named first team PING all-region for the third-straight year.

An America East Academic Honor Roll and Commissioner’s Honor Roll selection in 2005, Carillo was Hartford’s representative for the 2006 NCAA Leadership Convention in Orlando, Fla. She has played in 20 career golf tournaments for the Hawks and was an all-conference selection in 2005 after finishing third at the America East Championship.

One of America East’s premier men’s lacrosse goalies, Binghamton’s McKeown is also a SUNY Chancellor Scholar-Athlete, a USILA Scholar All-American, and a member of the America East Men’s Lacrosse All-Academic Team. He has earned third-straight America East all-conference honors and was the America East Player of the Year and an All-American in 2004.

Trachtenberg, a 2006 America East Woman of the Year finalist, graduated Summa Cum Laude from Stony Brook in May 2006. She was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society, Golden Key International Honour Sociey, Pi Sigma Alpha Honor Society, Alpha Kappa Delta Honor Society and was an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Nominee. A two-time America East All-Conference selection for women’s lacrosse, Trachtenberg also garnered the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence and SUNY Chancellor’s Scholar-Athlete Award.

Cheney won the Dean Smith Academic Award for most outstanding student-athlete at Maine and was named an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America First-Team selection and a member of the America East Softball All-Academic Team in 2006. She has been named to the America East Academic Honor Roll four times and a Maine Scholar-Athlete three times. On the diamond, she was a three-time All-America East First-Team selection and finished second in school history for most hits in a single season with 61 in 2006.

Binghamton’s Koizim won the school’s top academic honor, the ECAC Merit Medal, and had the highest cumulative GPA of any Binghamton athlete. Koizim helped lead the Bearcats to a runner-up finish at the America East Championship, while capturing three league titles, two runner-up finishes and a third-place showing.

Breznikar was a Dean’s List student in five out of six semesters, most recently posting a 4.0 in the spring semester of 2006. A three-time member of America East’s Commissioner’s Honor Roll, Breznikar was also a member of the America East All-Academic Team, while holding three school records in the pool.

A four-time member of America East’s Commissioner’s Honor Roll, Meir is a member of the Society of Distinguished Scholar-Athletes. Meir helped lead the Seawolves to their first America East Championship and first NCAA berth in 2006 as he garnered all-conference second-team honors at No. 1 singles and was named to both the all-tournament team and the America East First-Team at No. 1 doubles with teammate Michael Crooks.

Kushnirovich was a member of the inaugural America East Women’s Tennis All-Academic Team. She also produced second-best wins total (27) in Binghamton’s history with 27-9 singles record and was first team all-conference in singles and doubles.

Allstadt received the UAlbany Presidential Scholar-Athlete Award and the Chancellor’s Scholar-Athlete Award for second straight year. The Great Dane was the 2006 America East Indoor Champion in the 3,000- and 5,000-meters, enroute to being the Outstanding Track Performer of the Year at the conference championship.

Ryan, a member of the ESPN The Magazine Academic All District Team, was enrolled in Boston University's extremely competitive accelerated medical program, through which she will complete her bachelor's degree and medical degree, overlapping the two programs, in seven years. She finished 10th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA East Regional Outdoor Championships and was second at the America East Cross Country Championship. Ryan also set a new America East Indoor 3,000-meter record at the conference’s indoor championship.

UMBC’s Grossman was named to the ESPN The Magazine Men’s Track & Field/Cross Country Third Team and was also an America East Track & Field Scholar-Athlete for the 2003-04 Indoor, 2004 Outdoor, 2004-05 Indoor and the 2005 Outdoor seasons. He is a three-time defending America East indoor 55-meter dash champion and two-time outdoor 100-meter dash champion.

Lotmore was featured on America East Commissioner’s and UAlbany Athletic Director’s Honor Rolls, while also being named to the America East All-Academic squad. She finished ninth in the 5,000-meter run and set a school record of 16:46.68 at the 112th Penn Relays and also posted a second-place showing in the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter runs at the America East Outdoor Championship. Lotmore has made consecutive trips to the NCAA East Regionals in the 5,000-meter.
