Albany Men, Albany Women Named America East Champions

Durham, N.H. ? The University at Albany Men and Women are the 2006 Outdoor Track and Field America East Champions. After two days, the18th annual America East Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship, held at The Reggie F. Atkins Track Facility in Durham, N.H is complete.

Men | Women

The Albany men finished the meet with 199.5 points, while New Hampshire finished in a close second with 195.33. Binghamton followed with 129.5 points, good for third place, while UMBC (101.33), Boston U. (95), Maine (66.33), Vermont (35), Stony Brook (18) and Hartford (13) rounded out the rest of the field.

Albany’s Joe Greene highlighted the meet by capturing titles in the 400-meter dash, 400-meter hurdles and 4x4 relay. For his performances, Greene was named Most Outstanding Rookie and Most Outstanding Track Performer. Fellow rookie and Great Dane Freddie Wills, also took home hardware this weekend. Wills was named Outstanding Field Performer and also took home the Coaches award for scoring a meet-high 24 points. Wills placed first in the long jump, third in the high jump and second in the triple jump. New Hampshire’s men’s coaching staff earned the Coaching Staff of the Year award.

In the women’s meet, Albany led all teams with 180 points, to outscore Boston U.’s 166.5. New Hampshire finished third with 121.50 points, while UMBC (106), Binghamton (95), Vermont (88), Maine (78.5), Stony Brook (17) and Hartford (5.5) rounded out the field.

Albany’s coaching staff for the women was named Coaching Staff of the Year. The Great Danes were led by wins by Kamilah McShine (100-meter hurdles), Ritshell Verdier (Discus) and a one-two finish in the 1,500-meter by Jessica Ortman and Jenna Ortman, respectively.

Vermont’s Jan Carlson was named Outstanding Rookie for her win in the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash and second-place finish on the 4x100. Boston U.’s Tahari James took home the hardware for the Terriers by winning the long jump and triple jump, placing second in the 100-meter dash and third in the 200-meter dash. James was named Most Outstanding Performer, Most Outstanding Field Performer and earned the Coaches Award for scoring 34 points.

University at Albany, Binghamton University, Boston University, University of Hartford, University of Maine, UMBC, University of New Hampshire, Stony Brook University and University of Vermont competed at the 2006 Outdoor Track Championship.
