BALTIMORE ? Second-seeded Boston University won a hard-fought battle over No. 4 New Hampshire, 12-10, to win its fifth America East Women's Lacrosse Championship on Sunday afternoon at UMBC Stadium Complex. The Terriers earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and will learn their first-round opponent on Monday evening's selection show live on CSTV at 8 p.m.
The fourth-seeded Wildcats gave the Terriers all they could handle. UNH came out firing and led by as many as five, 8-3, at the 9:55 mark of the first half. Boston U. scored two goals before the break to cut the Wildcat lead to three, 8-5, at intermission.
UNH netted the first goal of the second half to extend its lead to four, 9-5, but the Terriers then netted four-straight goals to tie the contest at 9-9. New Hampshire replied with a goal by Alexa Webster at 17:09 to take a 10-9 lead. From then on out it was all Boston.
The Terriers ended the game on a 3-0 run and dominated the possession the rest of the way to come out with a 12-10 come-from-behind victory.
Playing on an ankle she sprained in the semifinals, Boston University's Lindsay Lewis netted a game-high four goals to lead the Terriers to their fourth title in the past five seasons. Lewis was named to the All-Championship Team along with teammates Molly Collins, Kaitlyn Cuneo and Danica Strutt. For her quality play on the defensive end of the field, Strutt was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
New Hampshire's Ashley Crook, Katie Leland and Kristin Blanchette were also honored on the All-Championship Team, as was UMBC's Kelly Fioriani and Julie Libertini and Stony Brook's Danielle Werner and Jen Sandtorv.
