BURLINGTON, VT. – An offensive outburst by the Maine Black Bears and late-game heroics by Vermont's Kyle Massie highlighted day one action of the 2006 America East Baseball Championship at Historic Centennial Field on Thursday evening. Maine topped Stony Brook 11-8 in the first game of the tournament, while UVM needed 10 innings to defeat Albany, 5-4.

In a game that featured five home runs, the Black Bears offense proved to be slightly more potent on the evening. Maine's Ryan Quintal paced the Black Bears to victory as he went 4-for-5 with a home run and four RBI. Quintal was one of three Black Bears to collect four hits on the day as Curt Smith (4-for-5) and Sean Parker (4-for-4) also tallied four hits.

After Albany pitching walked the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th inning, Massie singled to right field providing the game-winning RBI for the host Catamounts. Vermont led 3-1 after seven innings when the Great Danes put a three-run eighth inning together take a late 4-3 lead. UVM tied the game in the bottom of the eighth and came away win a thrilling come-from-behind win.

Stony Brook and Albany play in an elimination game on Friday at 12 noon, followed by a rematch of last season's title game as Vermont and Maine square off at 3:30 p.m.

The winner of the double-elimination America East Championship is awarded the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. Vermont and Albany are both in search of their first-ever conference crowns, while Maine (four titles) and Stony Brook (one title) are hoping to capture the league hardware once again.
