Stony Brook’s Danielle Werner (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) is the America East Player of the week, while Boston U.’s Jenna Golden (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) earns Defender of the Week honors. Stony Brook’s Kaitlin Leggio (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) and Vermont’s Kristen Millar (Whitby, Ontario/Sinclair Secondary) share this week’s America East Rookie of the Week honor. All accolades were announced Monday (April 24).
Werner had one of her best weeks of the season, leading the Seawolves with nine goals to go with two assists for 11 points along with seven draw controls, four ground balls and four caused turnovers. She began the week by netting four goals on four shots in a win over Wagner and added four points on three goals and an assist to go with six draw controls and two caused turnovers in the Seawolves upset victory over New Hampshire. She capped the week with three points on two goals and an assist versus UMBC.
Golden helped Boston U. extend its win streak to six games with a pair of impressive performances in goal, recording a combined 13 saves on the week while saving 62 percent of the shots she faced. The sophomore made seven first-half saves against Vermont before adding six more in just over 50 minutes of work at Albany. Against the Great Danes, Golden also registered two ground balls and a caused turnover. Golden lowered her league-leading goals against average to 8.11 with her performance.
Millar shattered the Vermont rookie record for most points in a season and broke the freshmen record for most goals in a season with four goals in Vermont’s win over Binghamton. She now has 23 goals, 19 assists for 42 points to lead the Catamounts. Tied the UVM school record for most points in a game with eight on four goals and four assists in UVM’s win over Binghamton. Also came up with 12 draw controls and ranks third in the nation in that category. Collected 10 ground balls in two games.
Leggio’s play was key in the Seawolves 2-1 week as the freshman tallied 11 points on eight goals and three assists to go with five caused turnovers and three ground balls. She kicked off the week with five points on three goals and two assists to go with three draw controls and three caused turnovers in a win over Wagner before adding three goals and an assist as the Seawolves upset America East leading New Hampshire, snapping the Wildcats nine-game winning streak. She capped the week with two goals and two caused turnovers versus UMBC.
