Sophomore Cheri Raffo netted a team-high 18 points to pace No. 3 Boston University past No. 6 New Hampshire, 66-60, in quarterfinal action of the 2006 Friendship Cottage Cheese America East Women's Basketball Championship at the University of Hartford's Chase Arena at the Reich Family Pavilion. The Terriers move on to the semifinals where they will face No. 2 Stony Brook on Saturday at 1 p.m.
The Terriers jumped out to an early seven-point lead, 10-3, at the 14:58 mark and proceeded to lead wire-to-wire. Boston U. led by as many as nine in the first frame of action, 29-20 with 3:30 left in the half, and took a 34-29 lead into intermission.
Early in the second half, Boston U. stretch its advantage to a game-high 10 points, 39-29, on a Kasey Devine layup with 18:25 to go. The Wildcats would not go away, however, as they battled back to tie the game twice, first at 40-40 and then again at 43-43 with 10 minutes even on the clock.
The Wildcats continue to hang around, trailing by just one, 49-48, at 5:56. The Terriers then scored seven of the game's next eight points to pull away for the victory.
Raffo went 7-for-13 from the field, including 3-of-5 from three-point range, while Devine finished with the game's only double-double (10 points, 11 rebounds). New Hampshire was paced by Ebony Woods' game-high 22 points.
Boston U. improves to 17-11 with the victory, while UNH has its season come to an end with a final 15-13 mark.
The winner of the conference’s nine-team tournament earns the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
