America East Cites Over 500 Student-Athletes for Honor Roll, Names Fall Scholar-Athletes

A total of 541 student-athletes have been named to the 2005 America East Fall Academic Honor Roll for earning grade point averages of 3.0 or higher, including America East Scholar-Athletes Kirby Davis (Maine men’s cross country), Marisa Ryan (Boston University women’s cross country), Merrie-Beth Maynard (Vermont field hockey), Stephan Hall (Albany men’s soccer), Debbie Newman (New Hampshire women’s soccer) and Ashlee Reed (Albany volleyball). Of that total, 261 student-athletes were named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll, acknowledging grade-point averages of 3.5 or higher during the most recent athletic season. The honors were announced Thursday (February 23).

The student-athletes and Scholar-Athletes were members of teams in the six championship sports which America East offered in the fall season including men’s cross country, women’s cross country, field hockey, men’s soccer, women’s soccer and volleyball. Member institutions of America East Conference for the 2005 fall season included University at Albany, Binghamton University, Boston University, University of Hartford, University of Maine, University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), University of New Hampshire, Stony Brook University and University of Vermont.

A committee of athletic administrators and NCAA Faculty Athletics Representatives chose an honoree in each of the six fall championship sports. Each honoree was a starter or prominent reserve and carries a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.20.

Maine had the most representatives named to the Academic Honor Roll as 81 Black Bear student-athletes were selected. New Hampshire (79), Vermont (74), Albany (57) and Hartford (54) rounded out the top five. Boston U. and UMBC both had 53 recipients, while Binghamton had 50 and Stony Brook 40.

Vermont featured 43 student-athletes named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll to lead all institutions. Maine (40), New Hampshire (38), Hartford (31) and Albany (26) were others well-represented by student-athletes with grade-point averages at 3.5 or better. The New Hampshire women’s cross country team had 13 scholar-athletes, the highest total of all institutional sports.

Maine had the highest percentage of student-athletes named to the Academic Honor Roll as 81 of its 101 student-athletes (80.2 percent) in fall sports received that distinction. Vermont (68.5), Hartford (64.3), New Hampshire (60.3), Binghamton (59.5), Albany (54.8), Boston U. (54.6) and UMBC (52.5) were other schools with more than half their student-athletes named to the Academic Honor Roll.

Davis, a junior at Maine, is a civil engineering major. He was named to the 2005 America East Cross Country All-Academic Team and the America East honor roll in 2003, 2004 and 2005 for track and cross country. Davis is a two-time Maine Scholar-Athlete and a member of the Senior Skulls (Maine Academic Honor). Davis’ athletic success is highlighted with winning the 2005 America East Cross Country individual title.

Ryan, a junior at Boston U., is a medical science major with an art history minor. Ryan finished second in this fall’s America East Cross Country Championship and went on to place 14th in the 2005 NCAA Regional. Ryan currently owns the 3,000-meter steeple chase record at Boston U, she also won the 3,000-meters at the 2005 America East Indoor Championship.

Maynard is a senior sociology major and has been named to the NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad and the America East Honor Roll three times each. She was also selected to the America East All-Academic Team this past fall. A two-time captain for the Catamounts, Maynard was named the team’s Most Improved Player in 2002 and Most Valuable Player in 2004. This past season, she started all 18 games, scored two goals and handed out seven assists to lead Vermont to the 2005 America East Field Hockey semifinals for the second consecutive year.

Hall, who helped led Albany to the semifinals of the America East Men’s Soccer Championship for the second consecutive year, is a repeat selection as an America East Scholar-Athlete. The junior midfielder is majoring in urban planning with a dual minor in history and psychology. He was selected to the 2005 CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team, becoming the first Albany soccer player to earn this distinction. Hall is a two-time America East second-team selection and finished the 2005 season ranked fifth in the conference in points (17) and assists (7).

Newman, a senior occupational therapy major at New Hampshire, was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District First-Team in 2004 and 2005. A co-captain of this season’s Wildcat squad, she led a defense that recorded eight shutouts and scored one point on an assist. Other athletic honors include being named to the America East Women’s Soccer All-Conference Second-Team in 2002, 2003 and 2004 and the All-Rookie team in 2002.

Reed, a senior human biology and psychology dual-major, is president of the Albany Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and was awarded the Albany Alumni Association Athletic Scholarship. On the court, she was first-team all-conference selection in 2003, 2004 and 2005 and guided the Great Danes to back-to-back regular season titles in 2004 and 2005. Reed recorded her 1,000th career kill and 1,000th career dig this season, becoming only the third player in program history to accomplish this feat.
