Sophomore Barry Neville (Glasgow, Scotland/Mearns Castle) converted a penalty kick with 58 second left in the first overtime to lift top-seeded Binghamton University to a 1-0 win over No. 2 University of Vermont in the America East Championship game on Saturday at West Gym Field in Vestal, N.Y. The Bearcats earn their second America East Championship, the won their first in 2003. They have earned the conference’s automatic bid into the NCAA College Cup and will await seeding and location, which will be announced on the NCAA selection show on Monday between 4-5 on ESPNEWS.
The game remained scoreless through the first 98 minutes until Neville was awarded a penalty kick and found the back of the net for the 1-0 win.
Binghamton’s Jason Stenta (Binghamton, N.Y./ Chenango Valley) made two saves in a shutout effort, while Vermont’s Roger Scully (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) had four saves.
Binghamton improves to 9-6-5 overall, while Vermont finishes 9-7-4 overall.
