Junior Meagan Riemer (Ellington, Conn./Ellington/Sacred Heart) scored the game’s lone goal at 75:15 to lift the top-seeded University of Hartford to a 1-0 win over No. 3 University of Maine in the America East Championship game on Saturday at Al Marzook Field in West Hartford, Conn. The Hawks earn their league-best sixth America East title, first since 2002, and have earned the conference’s automatic bid into the NCAA College Cup and will await seeding and location, which will be announced on the NCAA selection show on Monday between 3-4 p.m. on ESPNEWS.

Neither team could get much going offensively until Riemer scored an unassisted goal on a ball that was volleyed out of mid-air into top-right corner. The Hawks made that goal stand up en route to the win and the title.

Hartford’s goalkeeper Liz Cook (Halifax, Nova Scotia/Halifax Grammar) recorded a shutout, while Maine’s Jasmine Phillips (Nepean, Ontario/Merivale) made one save in net.

The Hawks improves to 10-8-2 overall, while Maine closes out 2006 14-4-2 overall.
