Albany Men, Boston U. Women Lead After Day One of Outdoor Track & Field Championship

Durham, N.H. ? Day One of the 18th annual America East Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship, held at The Reggie F. Atkins Track Facility in Durham, N.H., is complete. The meet will resume Sunday, May 7, at 9 a.m.

After day one, Albany leads the men with 63.5 points and is followed closely by New Hampshire (58.33) and Binghamton (57.5). Boston U. (26), UMBC (22.33), Vermont (13), Maine (12.33), Hartford (11) and Stony Brook (9) round out the standings.

Albany’s Freddie Wills set the pace for the Great Danes by taking first in the long jump with a leap of 23’-5.5”, while teammate Andrew Allstadt finished off the day by winning the 10,000-meter (31:13.79). New Hampshire’s Matt Russell captured the title in the steeplechase (9:10.79), UMBC’s Nathan Dixon won the pole vault (16.’-2.75”), Boston U.’s Pete Maitland won the javelin with a throw of 213’, while Binghamton’s Adam Goldberg and Paddy Hennessy earned victories in the high jump and hammer throw, respectively.

On the women’s side, Boston U. (49), New Hampshire (48.5) and Albany (46) are the top three point getters, while Vermont (28), Binghamton (27), Maine (25.5) and UMBC (10) follow behind.

Boston U.’s Christine Laakso earned the Terriers a win in the 10,000 by running 37:05.22, while teammate Tahari James took the long jump title with a leap of 20’-5”. The Wildcats were led by New Hampshire’s Cathy Parker win in the steeplechase with a time of 10:32.76. Vermont’s Kedi Kinner won the javelin with a throw of 125’-07”, Binghamton’s Jamie Stitt won the pole vault (11’-9.75”), while Maine’s Clarissa Michalak put the Black Bears in the standings by winning the hammer throw with a 164’-09” heave.

This weekend will mark the second time the event has been held at the Reggie F. Atkins Track Facility, after last year being held at East Gym Complex at Binghamton University.

University at Albany, Binghamton University, Boston University, University of Hartford, University of Maine, UMBC, University of New Hampshire, Stony Brook University and University of Vermont will all vie for the 2006 Outdoor Track Championship.
