Boston University Advances to Field Hockey Title Game

Top-seeded Boston University defeated No. 4 University of Vermont 5-1 in semifinal action of the 2005 America East Field Hockey Championship Friday afternoon to advance to the conference’s title game on Saturday at 3 p.m. The Terriers will face the winner of the Albany-Maine semifinal, which gets underway at approximately 2:30 p.m.

Boston U. dominated the contest, scoring five unanswered goals to start the game, while outshooting the Catamounts, 18-4. The Terriers also attemped 12 more penalty corners (15-3) than Vermont on the afternoon.

America East Rookie of the Year Holly Wiles scored two goals and assisted on another to pace the Terriers to victory. Wiles’ assist came on the game’s first goal as she set up Amy Seaman for a score at 28:19. Ashley Parker then netted what turned out to be the game-winning goal by scoring on a penalty stroke nearly 18 minutes later to give Boston U. a 2-0 lead, which the Terriers took into the half.

Wiles gave Boston University more insurance in the second frame of action as she sent two goals to the back of the cage to give the Terriers a commanding 4-0 lead. Her first goal was unassisted at 41:10, while her second goal came just under three minutes later at 44:00 and was assisted on by Pam Spuehler.

Hadley Adams scored the final goal of the game for the Terriers to up their lead to 5-0. Boston University head coach Sally Starr then pulled starting goalkeeper Erin Prediger at the 61:49 mark in favor of Patty Morrison. Just under three minutes later, Vermont’s Danielle Collins scored the Catamounts lone goal of the contest at 64:06.

No. 3 Albany and No. 2 Maine square off in the other semifinal contest of the day, with the winner moving on to face the Terriers in the championship event.

The winner of the America East Championship will have to face the MAC champion in a play-in game on Tuesday, November 8 to gain a bid to the NCAA Tournament. The field hockey selection show will be aired live on CSTV Tuesday night, 7:30 p.m.
