2006 Women's Soccer Season Comes to a Close

The 2006 women's soccer season came to a close on Friday, November 10 with Boston University's 3-0 loss to Boston College and Hartford's 2-0 loss to Rutgers the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Click on the link below for the final full PDF of the 2006 campaign.

Albany Great Danes
Albany (5-13-1, 2-6-0 America East) finished its season on Oct. 25 with a 5-0 defeat at Cornell... Despite the loss, the Great Danes ended their season with a 5-13-1 record, four more victories than last year's total and the most for the program since moving to Division I in 1999... The team also won its first conference game since 2002, a 3-1 defeat of Vermont on Sept. 28, and snapped a 17-match losing streak with a 1-0 victory at Delaware State on Sept. 1... Sophomore forward Diana Barrera (Wheaton, Md./Albert Einstein) broke the team’s Division I record for points in a season with 15 (six goals, three assists), previously set by Sara Rickard in 2001... On Oct. 28, freshman midfielder Jaclyn Rosada (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) was named to the conference’s all-rookie team... Rosada tied for the team lead with six goals, five of which came in a five-match stretch from Sept. 12-28, when UAlbany went 3-2 and scored 17 goals as a team, seven more than it did during the entire 2005 season... The Great Danes graduate two seniors this season: midfielder Jamie Dougherty (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island/Monroe C.C.), who tied for third on the team with four goals after missing the first five matches due to injury, and goaltender Ashley Nuessle (Auburn, N.Y./Union Springs/Monroe C.C.), who led UAlbany with three victories.


Binghamton Bearcats
Binghamton (7-8-3, 4-4 America East) finished fourth in the final standings before being eliminated on penalty kicks in the conference quarterfinals... It marks the third consecutive year that the Bearcats have earned a top-four finish in the final standings... Binghamton extended its unbeaten streak in the America East championship (3-0-2).  The Bearcats, who captured the 2004 title, have not lost in five postseason games spanning three seasons.  The program has been eliminated on penalty kicks in each of the last two tournaments... Binghamton's 19-season streak of posting a winning overall record came to an end... Despite the top-four league finish, junior midfielder Tricia Reed (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) was the team's lone representative on the all-conference teams, earning first-team honors.  Reed tallied a team-best nine points (4 goals, 1 assist), netted three game-winning goals and was in the running for Midfielder of the Year distinction... Senior outside midfielder Kelly Burnham (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) closed out her stellar four-year career with four goals, including two-game winners... Senior keeper Kristie Bowers (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) recorded seven shutouts in her final collegiate season.  Bowers will graduate as the program's all-time saves leader (383).


Boston University Terriers
The Boston University women's soccer team finished its successful season with an NCAA first round loss to cross-town rival Boston College, 3-0... The Terriers close out the 2006 campaign with a 13-5-3 overall record, and a 6-1-1 mark in the America East Conference... The Terriers were making their second consecutive and fifth overall appearance in the NCAA... Boston U's at-large bid was the first in school history and the third in conference history, as every other appearance came via an automatic bid for winning the conference... Marisha Schumacher-Hodge (Pittsburgh, Pa./Schenley) earned the conference Midfielder of the Year award, while Farrell McClernon (West Chester, Pa./Merion Mercy) was league's Rookie of the Year... In total seven Terriers were named to all-conference teams, the most of any AE team... Stephanie Dreyer (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) finishes her career at Boston U., second on the team's all-time record's list in goals-against-average (0.63), second in career shutouts (20) and first in season shutouts (12)... Lauren Erwin (Orange, Conn./Orange) will also be leaving a legacy at Boston U., as one of the most accomplished forwards... She finishes ninth on BU's all-time leading scorers with 46 points.


Hartford Hawks
Top-seeded Hartford (9-8-2, 6-0-2 America East) advanced to the America East Championship finals last week with a 2-1 victory over fifth-seeded New Hampshire. The Hawks will face third-seeded Maine on Saturday, November 4 at 2 p.m. for the conference title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Hartford will be making its ninth finals appearance and will by vying for its seventh conference crown... Junior Meagan Riemer (Ellington, Conn./Ellington/Sacred Heart), the America East Striker of the Year and a first team all-conference selection, scored her team-leading seventh goal against the Wildcats on Sunday and later assisted on the game-winner. She now leads the team in scoring with 20 points. Sophomore Kacey Busque (Manchester, Conn./Manchester) netted the game-winning goal against UNH in the first half. She now has three goals on the season. Junior Liz Cook (Halifax, Nova Scotia/Halifax Grammar), the America East Goalkeeper of the Year and a first team all-conference selection, finished with five saves in the game... Three other Hawks also picked up postseason conference honors. Sophomore Kellie Leyland (Merseyside, England/Women's International Football Acad.) was named America East Defender of the Year and a was a first team all-conference selection. Freshman midfielder Laura Guigli (North Stonington, Conn./Wheeler) was a first team all-conference and all-rookie team selection, and junior forward Sara Flowers (Santee, Calif./Santana/Cal Poly Pomona) was named to the all-conference second team... Head coach John Natale and his staff (assistant coach Margaret Tietjen and goalkeeper coach Jeremy Wilson) were also named America East Coaching Staff of the Year. Now in his third season with the Hawks, he and his staff captured the league’s regular season title and the top seed in the America East Championship, despite a sixth-place preseason billing.


Maine Black Bears
The University of Maine women's soccer team (14-4-2, 5-3 America East) fell to Hartford 1-0 in the America East Championship game on Saturday in West Hartford, Conn... It is the fourth year in a row that the Black Bears have played in the America East Championship game... It was a record-setting year for the Black Bears... Maine received its first-ever NSCAA Top-25 ranking... Maine set school record for wins (14), fewest goals allowed in a season (8), and tied the school record for shutouts with 12... Keeper Jasmine Phillips (Nepean, Ontario/Merivale) had another outstanding season... She finished 14-4-2 with a 0.38 goals against average and a .909 save percentage... She set school record for wins in a season by a keeper (14), shutouts in a season (12), fewest goals against in a season (8) and lowest goals against average in a season (0.38).... The Black Bears did now allow a goal in the first half of a game all season... Maine did not allow more than one goal in any game... Also, Maine did not receive a yellow card... Marie-Andree Canuel (St.-Jean-Chrysostome, Quebec) and Laura Harper (Nepean, Ontario/Mother Teresa) were recently named to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team...Both will now be placed on the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration... Phillips, Canuel and Harper were all named to the America East All-Tournament Team... It is the third year in a row that Canuel has been named to the All-Tournament Team... It is the second year in a row that Phillips has received all-tournament honors.


UMBC Retrievers
UMBC (4-13-1, 0-8-0 America East) concluded its season last week with a pair of 3-0 losses to No. 20 Boston University (10/19) and Maine (10/22) and end the year on a seven-game losing streak... With a winless conference schedule, the Retrievers miss the postseason for the second time in four years since joining the America East... UMBC bid farewell to nine seniors before Sunday’s game against the Black Bears... The Retrievers scored just two goals against conference opponents, both by sophomore back Kali Schwartz (Congers, N.Y./Clarkstown South)... Schwartz scored four of UMBC’s last eight goals of the season, dating back to Sept. 15... UMBC scored 14 goals in their five non-losses (four wins, one tie) on the season but just four in their 13 defeats and were shut out 10 times... Junior forward Jessica Young (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) finished the season as the team’s leading scorer with five goals and 11 points but was held scoreless over the final 11 games... Schwartz ranked second on the team with four goals and eight points... Young is tied for fifth place all-time at UMBC with 23 career goals and ranks seventh with 52 career points... After missing the entire 2005 campaign with a knee injury, senior goalie Robin Babaris (Toronto, Ontario/Sir Oliver Mowatt) regained her starting job in the second half of the season and posted 71 saves.


New Hampshire Wildcats
New Hampshire (6-11-1, 4-4-0 America East) extended its run into to the America East Championship tournament for a league best sixth consecutive time...the wildcats garnered the fifth seed in the tournament after posting a 4-4 regular season conference record...freshman forward Jenna Duncan (Newtown, Pa.) tallied the game-winning penalty kick to send No.5 UNH to the semis by defeating No.4 Binghamton, 4-2, in penalty kicks...the Cats’ season ended with a 2-1 loss to eventual champion Hartford...senior midfielder Hillary Mefferd (Portland, Ore.) garnered America East All-Conference Second Team honors, while teammate Shaunna Kaplan (Framingham, Mass.) was selected to the America East All-Rookie for their efforts on the field...UNH fell victim by a single goal on eight occasions...sophomore forward Sara Hourihan (Lynnfield, Mass.) posted a team-highs in goals (6) and in points (14). Sophomore forward Michelle Sheehan (Belmont, Mass.) delivered a team-high five assists and was second in points with nine....senior goalkeeper Lynn Gugliuzza (Kenmore, N.Y.) registered a career-high seven shutouts along with 93 saves.


Stony Brook Seawolves
Stony Brook (8-7-2, 3-4-1 America East) finished its season on Oct. 22 with a 2-1 overtime loss to Vermont... Sophomore forward Brooke Barbuto(Syracuse, N.Y./Corcoran) led the team in points with 13 (six goals, one assist) while Tiffany Fasullo (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) added 11 points off four goals and three helpers... On Oct. 28, freshman goalkeeper Marisa Viola (Mattituck, N.Y./Mattituck) capped off her outstanding freshman season as she was named to the conference’s all-rookie team... Junior Jackie Timmes (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd/LaSalle) and Barbuto were both selected to the America East All-Conference Second Team.  


Vermont Catamounts
Vermont (5-9-3, 3-3-2 America East) closed out the regular season with a pair of tough road trips in four days ... The Catamounts fell at Maine, 1-0, on a penalty kick, but rebounded with a 1-0 overtime win at Stony Brook ... Freshman forward Carson Laderoute (Rutland, Vt./Rutland) scored her second overtime game-winner in three games to lift UVM past the Seawolves ... Laderoute volleyed in a bouncing ball 32 seconds into overtime to give Vermont the win and propel the Catamounts into the America East Playoffs for the second straight year ... She now leads the team in scoring with seven points in 16 games and two of her three goals this season have been game-winners ... Freshman goalkeeper Eliza Bradley (Charlotte, Vt./Champlain Valley Union) matched her career-high with 10 saves versus Stony Brook ...Vermont set a new school record for most overtime games in a season (7) ... The Catamounts are 3-1-3 in overtime games this year ... Vermont is making their fifth trip to the conference playoffs in the history of the program ... The last time UVM earned back-to-back trips to the playoffs was the 1995 and 1996 seasons.
