2006 Field Hockey Season Comes to a Close

Albany Great Danes Notes
UAlbany (12-7, 5-1 America East) finished the 2006 season with the most wins since the program moved to the Division I level in 1999... As a team, the Great Danes posted the most points (159) in program history, behind 52 goals and a program-record 55 assists... Sophomore midfielder Arlette Westdorp (Assen, Netherlands/Dr. Nassau College), who finished the season ranked first in the nation with 1.12 assists per game, became the school's all-time assists leader after recording 19, a single-season record... Westdorp, who has 33 career assists, is also tied for eighth on UAlbany's career points chart with 39... Sophomore Michele Polizois (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) is now ninth on the school's career goals list with 15, while junior Michelle Simpson (Middlesbrough, England/Univ. of Teesside) is tenth with 14... Simpson, who also recorded seven assists, is tied with Polizois for 11th on the career points chart with 35... Sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Ross (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) is fifth on the career saves chart with 145 and third in career wins with 20... Simpson and Westdorp became the program's first-ever players of the year this season, garnering A-East offensive and defensive honors, respectively... The Great Danes had seven representatives on the all-conference teams, the most since UAlbany joined the America East in 2001.

Maine Black Bears Notes
Maine (8-11, 3-2 America East) saw its season end with a 4-1 loss to Boston University in the America East Championship game on Sunday afternoon in Cambridge, Mass.... Maine upset No. 2 Albany in the semifinals to reach the America East finals for the fourth time in the last five years... Katie Flaherty (Winslow, Maine/Winslow), Rebecca Giroux (Augusta, Maine/Cony) and Amy Zdrojesky (East Greenville, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) were all named to the America East All-Tournament Team... It is the second time that Flaherty has been named to the America East All-Tournament team, as she also received All-Tournament honors in 2004... Zdrojesky, Maine's lone America East First Team selection, scored the game-winning goal in overtime against Albany in the semifinals... It was her first game-winning goal of the season... It is the second year in a row that Maine beat Albany 1-0 in the America East semifinals... Giroux posted her fourth shutout of the season on Friday when she blanked Albany... Nicole Emery (Winthrop, Maine/Winthrop) led Maine in scoring during the 2006 season with six goals and two assists for 14 points... Zdrojesky finished second on the team in points with four goals and five assists for 13 points... Senior Gina Legge (North Harwich, Mass./Harwich) led Maine with three defensive saves on the season... Andrea Thebarge led the Black Bears to their sixth America East Tournament as interim head coach.

UMBC Retrievers Notes
UMBC (1-14, 0-5 America East) dropped its season finale, 9-1, to America East rival New Hampshire on Oct. 28... The Retrievers concluded their fourth consecutive winless conference schedule and have not won a league game since joining the America East... Sophomore defender Courtney McNamara (Southampton, N.J./Lenape) scored the Retrievers’ lone goal of the game with less than three minutes remaining, converting on a penalty corner for the first goal of her career... The goal was UMBC’s first since Sept. 30 against Vermont... The Retrievers celebrated Senior Day before the game and bid farewell to their three senior captains ? Julie Moore (Rising Sun, Md./Rising Sun), Kristi Troster (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) and Rebekah Krolus (Westminster, Md./Westminster)... Moore is UMBC’s all-time leading scorer with 20 goals and 48 points... Troster ranks fourth all-time with 36 points... Freshman forward Mary Strain (Port Republic, Md./Patuxent) and sophomore midfielder Amanda Yanulevich (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) tied for the team lead with five points apiece, while Strain, Moore, Troster and sophomore forward Allyson Carter (Severn, Md./Meade) each had two goals on the season... Yanulevich and junior midfielder Amy Morrow (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) led the team with three assists, while Morrow and Troster each tallied two defensive saves.

New Hampshire Wildcats Notes
New Hampshire (3-15, 1-4 America East) ended the 2006 season with road victories against UMass (4-1) and UMBC (9-1)... Senior forward Emily Colton (Milton, Mass.) finished her collegiate career on a high note with four goals and an assist against UMBC; both the four goals and nine points were personal single-game highs... She also had three assists vs. UMass... Colton led UNH in both goals (13) and assists (five) to finish her career with 20 goals and 12 assists for 52 points... Colton ended her Wildcat career with a four-game point-scoring streak in which she recorded 7-4-18... With a penalty-stroke goal at UMBC, Colton was a perfect 2-for-2 on strokes this season; she attempted all of UNH’s strokes this season... Freshman forward Megan Shea (Melrose, Mass./Melrose) scored a personal-best three goals at UMass, then had a goal and an assist vs. UMBC... Shea ranked second to Colton in both goals (five) and points (12) and recorded a point in four of the last five games of the season (5-2-12)... Junior goalkeeper Margaux Shute (Norridgewock, Maine/Skowhegan) surpassed last year’s season save total with 150 this year; her .725 save percentage is also better than the 2005 mark... Senior back Anita Anastasi (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) led the team in defensive saves for the third consecutive season with three in 2006... The nine goals marked the team’s highest total since also scoring nine vs. UMBC in the 2003 season... Junior forward Jen Mooney (Manchester, N.H./Manchester West) recorded her first collegiate goal at UMass and also tallied a goal at UMBC... Colton, Shute, Shauna Sellenger (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) and Sam Geary (Norwood, Mass./Norwood) started all 18 games this season... Six of the team’s losses were by one goal.

Vermont Catamounts Notes
Vermont (11-8, 3-2) wrapped up one of its finest seasons in program history on Friday, falling in the America East Field Hockey Semifinals to top seeded and eventual champion, Boston University 1-0... Redshirt freshman Kristen Heavens (Harwinton, Conn./Lewis Mills) and sophomore Lauren Burke (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) were each named to the all-tournament team for their efforts... This year marked the second straight season and third time overall, that Vermont had advanced to the America East Tournament... Junior Danielle Collins (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) broke the school single-season records for points (45) and goals (18) and is now second all-time at Vermont with 87 points, only seven behind the leader... As a team the Catamounts smashed the school record for goals in a season, as they accounted for 59 tallies, which broke the old mark of 37 that had been set twice... Collins also set a new UVM record with three hat tricks in one season... Sophomore Maegan Luce (Hartford, Vt./Hartford) had a breakout year, finishing second in the conference and on the team in scoring with 42 points on 17 goals and eight assists... Vermont had a school record six student-athletes named to all-conference squads, led by Collins and Luce who each earned first team honors while Nicki Houghton took home coach of the year honors... The 11 wins were the second most in school history... Vermont has increased its win total from the previous year in each of the last three seasons.
