Albany Great Danes
UAlbany (13-9, 6-2 America East) held on for a 3-2 win over New Hampshire on Friday, Oct. 28... Senior outside hitter Shelby Goldman (Whitby, Ontario/Anderson Collegiate) recorded her fourth straight double-double with 18 kills and 14 digs... Goldman, who has 1,534 career kills, needs five to break the school’s all-time record... Senior outside hitter Ashley DeNeal (Muncie, Ind./Delta) also recorded her fourth straight double-double of the kill-dig variety with 15 kills and a match-high 21 digs... Senior setter Blair Buchanan (Muncie, Ind./Delta) tallied 50 assists and 11 digs to go along with four kills, three block assists and one solo block... Junior middle blocker Ashley Crenshaw (Birmingham, Ala./Hoover) notched 17 kills and four block assists while sophomore middle blocker Kamisha Kellam (Forestville, Md./Bishop McNamara) added four kills and four block assists, including the block that resulted in the matches deciding point... Junior defensive specialist Bev Hazell (Torrance, Calif./El Camino College) tallied six service aces in the match while senior libero Kristin Fiorillo (Painted Post, N.Y./Corning West) added 16 digs and five service aces... The Great Danes will return to action on Monday, Oct. 30, hosting Binghamton at 7 p.m... UAlbany will host A-East rival Maine on Friday, Nov. 3 before traveling to Hartford on Saturday, Nov. 4.
Binghamton Bearcats
Binghamton (12-14, 6-1 America East) went 1-0 on the week with a 3-0 win over Colgate on Wednesday night at the West Gym... The victory is the Bearcats' fourth straight and ninth in their last 11 and also extends the Bearcats' home winning streak to a school-record 13 matches... Kathleen Schauer (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) nailed a team-high 12 kills to lead Binghamton to a 30-21, 30-26, 30-28 victory over the visiting Red Raiders... Senior middle blocker Megan Hoag (Brunswick, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) posted nine kills and a match-high three service aces while senior setter Ashley Meffert (Louisville, Ky./Fern Creek) tallied 36 assists... Sophomore libero Jaclyn Strader (Kettering, Ohio/Julienne Catholic) and sophomore defensive specialist Katherine Courage (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) recorded 13 and 11 digs respectively... This week, the Bearcats will square off against each of the three teams directly below them in the standings... Binghamton visits second-place Albany on Monday before returning home to host third-place Stony Brook on Friday. On Sunday, the Bearcats again hit the road as they travel to Maryland for an afternoon contest at UMBC.
Hartford Hawks
Hartford (8-16, 0-9 America East) finished last week with a 1-2 record, starting off with a five-game win over non-conference foe Providence. Hartford then dropped a three-game match to UMBC on the road before falling in four games at home against Maine. In the weeks opening game, the Hawks were led by junior Jennifer Monroy (Rahway, N.J./Union Catholic). She finished the game with 22 kills. Monroy then led the Hawks against the Retrievers and the Black Bears. Against UMBC she had 12 kills, the only player in double digits. She then posted a 17 kill outing against Maine, in a match where she reached the 1,000 kill plateau. Entering the match, Monroy needed only four kills, a feat which she reached in the first game, at which time she was presented with a commemorative ball. Teri Connolly (Casa Grande, Ariz./Casa Grande Union) and Erin Macro (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln) also faired well for Hartford last week. Connolly finished the week with 27 kills and led the team in attack percentage with a .274 showing over the three matches (27 kills, 10 errors, 62 total attacks). Macro added 21kills last week. Monroy continues to lead the team on the season with 336 kills. Sarah Rasor (Tampa, Fla./Academy of the Holy Names) continues to captain the Hawks offense with 769 assists this season. Defensively the Hawks are led by Lauren Flores (Richmond, Texas/Foster), who has 274 digs.
Maine Black Bears
Maine (6-16, 4-4 America East) went 2-0 during the weekend with a pair of 3-1 victories over Stony Brook on Friday and at Hartford on Sunday... Sophomore hitter Laura Goettsch (Woodstock, Ontario/Jacksonville University) recorded match-highs in kills in both matches, including a career-high 17 in Friday’s victory over the Seawolves... Goettsch followed 15 kills in Sunday’s win over the Hawks... Lindsay Allman (Fenton, Mo./Rockwood Summit H.S.) and Amanda Armstrong (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West H.S.) each tallied 11 kills in the win over Stony Brook... Senior setter and co-captain Shelly Seipp (Spokane, Wash./John R. Rogers H.S.) totaled 47 assists in each match, and also had 12 digs on Friday... The Black Bears return to action this weekend with a pair of road matches... Maine will take on Albany on Friday at 7 p.m., and then face New Hampshire on Sunday at 1 p.m.
UMBC Retrievers
UMBC (12-13, 5-4 America East) is over .500 in conference play for the first time since Oct. 6... the Retrievers began the week by hosting Hartford and defeated the Hawks in three straight sets for their second victory over Hartford this season... UMBC traveled to Stony Brook, marking the second match between the teams this season, and defeated the Seawolves for the second time this season, 3-2... Freshman Ashley Oscars (Bakersfield, Calif./Liberty) extended her streak to 19 consecutive games with double-figure kills after posting 3.50 kills per game, 4.44 points per game and 1.38 digs per game last week... In conference play she is averaging 4.41 kpg, hitting .223 and recording 4.85 points per game... Freshman Kira Giles (Winnipeg, Canada/Glenlawn) recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 54 assists and 14 digs against Stony Brook... Giles has three 50-plus assist performances on the season and is averaging 10.32 apg and 9.93 apg in conference play... Jennifer Wylie (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) tallied 35 digs last week to total 473 on the season and moving her into 4th place in the UMBC All-Time Dig List... UMBC returns to action this week by hosting Binghamton on Sunday.
New Hampshire Wildcats
New Hamphire (8-15, 3-5 America East) lost its only match to Albany on Saturday night, 3-2 at University Gym. Senior captain Sarah Rehn (Oceanside, Calif./Vista) and junior outside hitter Emmy Blouin (St. Albert, Alberta/Paul Kane) led the team in kills with 16 apiece in the losing cause against the Great Danes. Blouin leads the Wildcats in kills with a career-high 332 in her third season in Durham. Rehn has also etablished a personal season best in kills in 2006 with 329 in her senior campaign... Coach Jill Hirschinger has posted 557 career coaching victories in 28 seasons as a head coach. She needs only three victories to become the 14th active NCAA head coach to reach that milestone. Hirschinger also coached at Drake University and Ferris State... UNH hits the road at Hartford (7 p.m.) on Nov. 3rd and returns home to Lundholm Gym on Nov. 5th for a match vs. the University of Maine (1 p.m.)
Stony Brook Seawolves
Stony Brook (12-14, 5-4 America East) went 0-2 over the weekend... the Seawolves opened the week with a 3-1 loss on the road at Maine and then fell in five at home to UMBC... Morgan Sweany (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley) is continuing her stellar junior year as she leads America East with 445 kills, 4.98 points per game and is second in the league with 4.49 kills per game... Claire Lindner (Northport, N.Y./Northport) has moved to fifth all-time at Stony Brook with 1,274 digs and is second in the conference with 4.18 digs per game... Kaitlyn Deutsch (St. Louis, Mo./Southern Miss) has wasted no time in settling in as Stony Brook’s setter. The junior transfer leads America East with 11.65 assists per game and already ranks in the top-10 all-time at Stony Brook with 1,153 total assists.
