TODAY'S GAMES
William & Mary at Maine, 7:30 p.m.
Maine opens the 2006-07 with Colonial foe William & Mary. The Tribe was picked fifth in this season’s preseason coaches’ poll. The Black Bears have won six-straight home openers, including last season’s 88-56 victory over Kennesaw State on the opening day of the Dead River Company Classic.
YESTERDAY'S RESULTS
at Hartford 62, Dartmouth 45
Erica Beverly posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards to lead four Hawks in double figures as Hartford advances to the second round of the preseason WNIT. The Hawks will travel to play Purdue on Sunday night at 5 p.m.
Massachusetts 60, at Vermont 48
Vermont led by as many as six in the first 10 minutes of the game, but the Minutewomen took control in the final five minutes of the opening half and held on to earn the 60-48 win. Three freshmen led Vermont in season opener. Courtnay Pilypaitis netted a team-high 11 points, grabbed seven rebounds and added four assists in her debut, while May Kotsopoulos added 10 points and Alissa Sheftic grabbed six rebounds.
at George Washington 72, UMBC 58
UMBC gave 21st ranked George Washington all they could handle, but in the end it was GW who held on for the 72-58 win. Brittnie Hughes led three Retrievers in double digits with a team-high 13 points.
LaSalle 77, at Albany 63
Amanda Ward and Britney McGee combined to score 34 points for the Great Danes, but it was not enough as Atlantic-10 foe LaSalle downed UAlbany 77-63. The Great Danes also held a commanding 25-13 advantage in rebounding in the losing effort.
at Marist 82, Stony Brook 72
Jessica Smith posted a double-double with 23 points and 14 rebounds, but it was not enough as the Seawolves dropped the season opener to defending MAAC champion Marist. Smith led three Stony Brook players in double figures, Mykeema Ford finished with 14 points, while Dana Ferraro chipped in with a dozen. The Seawolves also had 11 blocks in the contest.
