Albany's Shelby Goldman (Whitby, Ontario/Anderson Collegiate) has been tabbed America East Player of the Week for volleyball, while UMBC's Ashley Oscars (Bakersfield, Calif./Liberty) earns Rookie of the Week accolades for the fifth-straight week. New Hampshire's Kate Uitti (Pinckney, Mich.) was also named Setter of the Week on Monday (October 9).
Goldman led the Great Danes to an undefeated weekend in America East Conference play as the Great Danes defeated Stony Brook, 3-2, on Friday and swept Hartford, 3-0, on Saturday. Goldman totaled 40 kills and 23 digs in the two matches. In the victory over the Seawolves, Goldman recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 26 kills and a career-high 16 digs. Goldman notched three straight points in the fifth and deciding game for the Great Danes, including a smash down the left line that gave UAlbany a 13-10 advantage. In the three-game sweep of Hartford, Goldman led all players with 14 kills and added seven digs and one block assist. Goldman is second on UAlbany’s career kills charts with 1,473 and is just 65 away from the all-time record.
Oscars led UMBC to two victories last week recording a team best 4.25 kills per game and 5.00 points per game as the Retrievers defeated St. Francis (Pa.) and Maine. Oscars, who has double figures in kills in 12 consecutive matches, tallied 18 kills, a service ace and two assisted blocks against St. Francis (Pa.) for 20 points in the match. She went on hit .406 with 16 kills and three errors on 32 swings against Maine to lead the Retrievers to victory in their only conference match of the week. Oscars tallied eight assisted blocks for 20.0 points in the match. Oscars on the season is averaging 4.26 kpg and 4.73 ppg while in league play she is averaging 4.92 kpg and 5.38 ppg.
Uitti, also a freshman, tallied 92 assists and 16 digs on the week averaging 13.14 helpers per game in two matches. She posted a career-high 53 assists and seven digs in the 3-1 loss at Binghamton on Sunday and she managed 39 assists and nine digs in the 3-0 win against Central Connecticut on Friday night.
