Goettsch, Oscars, Giles Tabbed Weekly Volleyball Award Winners

Maine's Laura Goettsch (Woodstock, Ontario/Jacksonville University) has been named America East Player of the Week for volleyball, while a pair of UMBC freshmen - Ashley Oscars (Bakersfield, Calif./Liberty) and Kira Giles (Winnipeg, Canada/Glenlawn) - garner Rookie of the Week and Setter of the Week, respectively. The awards were announced Monday (October 30).

Goettsch recorded match-highs in kills in both matches this week as she averaged 4.0 kills per game and 4.56 points per game, while hitting .306. She recorded a career-high 17 kills in Friday’s 3-1 win over Stony Brook and followed with a match-high tying 15 kills in Sunday’s 3-1 win over Hartford.

Oscars earns her seventh Rookie of the Week of the 2006 campaign as she extended her streak to 19 consecutive games with double-figure kills after posting 3.50 kills per game, 4.44 points per game and 1.38 digs per game last week. Oscars opened the week against Hartford, tallying 12 kills against the Hawks with eight digs, and three service aces. In the next match against Stony Brook, Oscars recorded 16 kills, three digs, four service aces, and a block assist.

Giles recorded her eighth double-double of the season as the Retrievers defeated Stony Brook. Giles tied her match-high of 54 assists in the match against Stony Brook and also added 14 digs. Last week, she averaged 11.75 assists per game for a total of 94.
