Maine Captures 2-0 Win Over Vermont, Advances to Semifinals

WEST HARTFORD, CONN. ? No. 3 University of Maine captured a 2-0 win over No. 6 University of Vermont in first-round action at the America East Women’s Soccer Championship on Friday night at Al Marzook field in West Hartford, Conn. The Black Bears move on to play No. 2 Boston University in the semifinals on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Vermont closes out 2006 5-10-3 overall, while the Black Bears improve to 14-3-1 overall.

The teams were scoreless through the first 62 minutes before Maine broke the deadlock when Laura Harper (Ottawa, Ontario/Mother Teresa) netted a goal at 62:38 setup by Marie-Andree Canuel (St.-Jean-Chrysostome, Quebec/F.X.Garneau) to give the Black Bears a 1-0 lead. They added an insurance goal when Canuel headed in a corner kick by Marie-Michele Bouchard (Beauport, Quebec/F.X.-Garneau), who was credited with the assist at 71:03.

Maine’s Jasmine Phillips (Nepean, Ontario/Merivale) made one save in her shutout effort, while Vermont’s Eliza Bradley (Charlotte, Vt./Champlain Valley Union) registered six saves.
