AMERICA EAST NOTES:
Great Danes Flex Muscle: The University at Albany has taken form as the squad that was picked to win the 2006 America East Championship. After getting off to a slow 2-6 start to the 2005-06 campaign, the Great Danes are currently riding a five-game win streak, including four-straight conference victories. Albany sits atop the league standings with a flawless 4-0 mark. The five-game win streak is their first since the 1999-2000 season and the 4-0 start to conference play is their best beginning ever. Albany can attribute its five-straight victories to its defense. The Great Danes are holding opponents to 57.4 ppg and 37.6 percent shooting over that span.
Standout Performers: As the 2005-06 America East Conference season hit full-stride this week, there were several players around the league that stepped up for their teams. Andre Heard (Oklahoma City, Okla./John Marshall/Redlands CC) averaged 19.6 ppg and 5.0 rpg to lead Binghamton to two conference victories on the week. Boston University’s Kevin Gardner (Palos Verdes, Calif./Peninsula) scored a career-high 24 points in a loss to UMBC on Thursday and also recorded his third double-double of the season with a game-high 11 rebounds. For the week, he averaged 18.5 ppg and 9.5 ppg. Already a four-time America East Player of the Week winner in 2005-06, Hartford’s Kenny Adeleke (Queens, N.Y./Paul Robeson/Hofstra) averaged 24.0 ppg and 13.5 rpg in two losses for the Hawks. Adeleke extended his streak of consecutive double-doubles to six, tying Vin Baker for the school record for consecutive games with a double-double. Mitchell Beauford (Queens, N.Y./Christ the King) of Stony Brook averaged 17.7 ppg in three games last week, leading the Seawolves to a pair of victories. He scored a season-high 20 points in Monday's win over Colgate and followed that up with 16 points versus Vermont, including the game-winning three-point play with 1.5 seconds remaining. UMBC’s Mike Housman (Great Falls, Va./Langley) played through injury to average 15.0 ppg and 9.0 rpg, leading the Retrievers to two wins on the week. Housman was a perfect 7-for-7 from the field versus Navy and then poured in a career-high 24 points, including the game-winning layup with 0.7 second remaining, versus Boston University. Vermont’s Martin Klimes (Prague Czech Republic/Walsingham Acad.) posted a pair of double-doubles in conference games this week.
Mr. Double Double: Hartford’s Kenny Adeleke (Queens, N.Y./Paul Robeson/Hofstra) has been a force in the paint so far this season for the Hawks. The 6-9 forward has tallied six-straight double-doubles and 10 total on the season. He is currently leading the league in scoring (20.5 ppg) and rebounding (11.9 rpg), ranks second in blocks (1.92 bpg) and third in field goal percentage (56.4 percent). Despite losing the past four games, Adeleke is averaging 21.5 ppg and 14.0 rpg.
