Hartford’s Kenny Adeleke (Queens, N.Y./Paul Robeson/Hofstra) was named America East Player of the Week for the fourth time this season on Monday (January 2), while Boston University’s Corey Hassan (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack) and Maine’s Philippe Tchekane Bofia (Yaounde, Cameroon/Redemption Christian) share Rookie of the Week accolades.
Adeleke posted three double-doubles in as many games over the two-span, averaging 19.3 ppg and 14.3 rpg. He scored 20 points and recorded 14 rebounds in the 81-71 victory over Molloy College and followed that up with game-highs of 17 points and 14 rebounds against Monmouth. The 6-9 forward capped the week with 21 points and 15 rebounds at Virginia.
Hassan led Boston U . to a third-place finish in the Cable Car Classic by averaging 16.5 ppg. He was named to the all-tournament team for his efforts. On Wednesday, Hassan scored a team-high 16 points against Bucknell as he was the only Terrier to reach double figures, shooting 4-for-10 from three-point land. Against UC Riverside on Thursday, he had 17 points, including three three-pointers in the first four minutes of the game. He finished that contest 6-for-8 from the field including 3-for-4 from beyond the arc. He also netted 16 points with six assists in the Terriers win over Canisius on December 22.
Tchekane Bofia scored 14 points in each of Maine’s games in the Dr. Pepper Classic. Tchekane Bofia grabbed four rebounds in the opener against Chattanooga and followed that up with six rebounds in the consolation game against Mercer. He hit 6-of-9 shots from the field against Chattanooga.
AMERICA EAST NOTES:
Great Danes streak into conference play: The University at Albany is beginning to resemble the squad that was picked to win the 2006 America East Championship. After getting off to a slow 2-6 start to the 2005-06 campaign, the Great Danes are currently riding a three-game win streak, including two conference victories over Binghamton and Stony Brook. Albany will be face a tough league test on Wednesday as it hosts Hartford at 7 p.m. The game can be seen live on Time Warner Cable in Albany and will be preceeded by a re-airing of the first installment of America East On Campus at 6:30 p.m.
Mr. Wilson: Sophomore forward Brent Wilson (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Prairie) led the Great Danes to three victories over the two-week holiday span. Wilson averaged 13.6 ppg and 3.7 rpg, while shooting 46.7 percent (7-for-15) from three-point land.
Turner turns heads: Maine’s Ernest Turner (Camden, N.J./Sterling/Camden) had an impressive showing at UT Chattanooga’s Dr. Pepper Classic on December 29-30. The senior guard averaged 22.0 ppg, 4.5 rpg and 3.0 apg, while being named to the All-Tournament Team for his efforts. He scored 18 points and dished out four assists in the first game against the host UT Chattanooga Mocs and followed that up by tying his season-high with 26 points in Maine’s 72-64 win over Mercer in the consolation game. Turner hit five three-point field goals on the week.
Cat family: Vermont’s Kyle Cieplicki (Shelburne, Vt./Rice Memorial) posted back-to-back career highs to lead the Catamounts to victories over Dartmouth and American. The sophomore guard now leads America East in three-point shooting at 43.9 percent. His uncle, Bernie Cieplicki was also an outstanding shooter for the Catamounts and led America East in three-point field goals in 1995-96 with a then-conference record 91 trifectas.
America East TV Game: The 2005-06 men’s America East TV schedule gets underway this week as Binghamton hosts Stony Brook on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. Carl Reuter (play-by-play) and Jack Armstrong (color analyst) will call the game live on MSG and WIVT. A year to remember: Vermont’s win over Big East Champion Syracuse in the first round of the 2005 NCAA Tournament was ranked fifth among the Top 10 Best Moments in College Basketball in 2005 by CBS Sportsline. The 60-57 win at the DCU Center in Worcester was also the lone sports story in the Vermont Associated Press Top 10 News Stories of 2005.
