Boston University's Meghann Cook (Melrose, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) and Vermont's Nikkie Hessney (Victor, N.Y./Victor Central) share Player of the Week honors, while Sara Hourihan (Lynnfield, Mass./Lynnfield) of New Hampshire repeats as Rookie of the Week. The awards were announced on Monday (September 12).
In three games, Cook fired off 17 shots, scoring two goals and recording one assist for five points. In the Terriers’ 1-0 win at TCU on Friday, Cook scored the game’s only goal in the first half, on a header feed from freshman Melissa Schumacher-Hodge. Cook took seven shots on the day, including three on goal. In Sunday’s 2-0 win over Baylor, Cook assisted on the Terriers’ first goal, lofting a perfect corner kick to the foot of Jennifer Herman for the game’s first tally. Cook then gave Boston U. a two-goal lead when she scored on a low, hard shot in the 61st minute. She also had 7 shots against Baylor.
Hessney scored her second career hat trick and the 18th in the history of the women’s soccer program, while factoring in on every UVM goal in Vermont’s 4-1 victory over Robert Morris at the Duquesne Invitational. She totaled seven points in the game and also handed out an assist enroute to being named to the all-tournament team. Hessney has scored four goals in the last three games and totaled nine points. Hessney owns the NCAA Division I record for the fastest hat trick, scoring three goals in 2:22 against Stetson in the 2003 season opener.
Hourihan recorded three goals and an assist as UNH went 1-1 last week. Hourihan tallied career highs in goals (two), assists (one) and points (five) to propel the Wildcats to a 3-0 victory against Lafayette, a game that also marked her second game-winning goal of the season. She also scored the game’s first goal versus Fordham in the ECAC Women’s Soccer Classic.
