Northeastern’s Chris Emanuele (Mississauga, Ontario/Michael Power/St. Joseph’s) and Devin Monds (Ottawa, Ontario/Nepean) were named America East Player of the Week and Pitcher of the week, respectively on Monday (April 11). Maine’s Curt Smith (Curacao, Netherlands/Peter Stuyvesant) was also honored as Rookie of the Week.
Emanuele was instrumental in the Huskies’ conference season-opening sweep of Hartford. The junior outfielder went 3-for-3 with a home run, a triple and a double to go along with four RBI in the first game on Saturday. He then capped off the day with a grand slam in the second game on Saturday, and then went 4-for-5 and scored the winning run in the 10th inning on Sunday.
Mond was dominant on the mound in his first league start of the season versus Hartford. Senior right-hander took a no-hitter into the 10th inning after completely stiffling Hartford during regulation. He retired the first nine batters in a row and then the last 12 batters he faced before the 10th inning. He fanned 14 Hawks in the game including seven consecutive batters. He finally gave up a hit to lead off the 10th.
Smith led the Black Bears with a .444 batting average in five games this past week. His eight hits were a team-high on the week and he scored a run in three of the five games. The rookie infielder hit his first career triple in Maine’s 4-3 win over Central Connecticut State University on April 6 and also stole two bases on the week and is second on the team in stolen bases this season.
