Final Women's Basketball Weekly Awards Handed Out

Maine’s Traversi (Attleboro, Mass./Bishop Fehan) and Francesca Vanin (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional) share Wilson Player of the Week honors. Vermont’s Alexis Castro (Chula Vista, Calif./Coronado) and UMBC freshman center Amanda Robinson (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) split this week’s Rookie of the Week accolade.

Traversi extended her double-digit scoring streak to 13 games with two more this past week. The senior guard averaged 20.0 ppg and 4.5 rpg. Traversi scored 21 points, grabbed 5 rebounds, had one assist and two steals at Stony Brook and then led the Black Bears in scoring with 19 points, 4 rebounds, 6 assists and one steal in her final home game at Alfond Arena in a 63-55 win over UMBC. In each game, Traversi connected on four three-pointers and shot a combined 50 percent from the field.

Vanin recorded back-to-back double-doubles – her sixth and seventh of the year – to lead NU in two important wins this week. Vanin led all scorers and rebounders with 17 points and 13 boards against Binghamton and then pumped in 18 points and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds on Senior Day versus Stony Brook. The senior captain leads the team with seven double-doubles this season and stands third on the team with 11.7 ppg. Vanin has scored double-figures in the past 10 contests.

Castro led all scorers with 18 points in Vermont’s loss to Hartford and added 18 more points in UVM’s victory over Binghamton. She averaged 18.0 ppg and 6.5 rpg for the week, while shooting 50 percent (16-for-32) from the field. In the last three games she is averaging 19.3 ppg, 5.7 rpg and is shooting 49 percent from the field and 70 percent from the foul line – all off the bench.

Robinson started to emerge in a big way in the Retrievers lineup last week, averaging 19.5 ppg in games against No. 3 seeded New Hampshire and No. 1 seeded Maine. Robinson shot an impressive 56.3 percent from the field, making 18-of-32 shots and went 3-of-4 at the charity stripe. Robinson started the week at New Hampshire, tallying a career-high 20 points as she came off the bench to play 26 minutes in the contest. Robinson added five rebounds, a block and steal in her 9-of-15 performance from the field. Against Maine, Robinson shot 9-of-17 for 19 points in an encore performance. She tallied eight rebounds to tie another career high and added four assists, two blocks and three steals. For the week Robinson finished with four steals, three blocks and four assists to go with 13 rebounds. Over the last five games Robinson has three double-digit performances and averaging 11.8 ppg and 5.4 rpg.
