BOSTON—Binghamton's Kaan Tayla (Ankara, Turkey/Buyuk), and UMBC’s Meghan Sackett (Cockeyscille, Md./Dulaney/Maryland) have been named the Men’s and Women’s Swimming Performers of the Week, respectively, while Maine's Keith Burgie (Arundel, Maine/Thornton Academy) and New Hampshire's Shana Dege (Lockport, N.Y.) have been named the Men’s and Women’s Diving Performers of the Week, respectively. Binghamton's Tayla met the NCAA B provisional mark with victories in both the 50 and 100 freestyle this past weekend at the Bucknell Invitational. In the 100 freestyle, Tayla’s time of 44.00 broke his school record of 44.46 which he set last season at the ECAC Championship. In the 50 freestyle his time of 20.18 was two hundredths of second behind his school record. He also swam the final leg of the 400 medley relay that was triumphant in 3:26.22, breaking the school record set at the America East Championship last season. In the 100 butterfly he finished second to teammate Trevor Stone with a time of 51.46.
Sackett broke three individual school records, three school relay records and five meet records at the George Mason Patriot Invitational, winning four individual events and two relays to lead the Retrievers to a second-place finish. On Nov. 18, the first day of competition, Sackett broke her own school record in the 500-free, which she had previously set last week against Towson, by more than three seconds with a time of 4:50.42, also lowering the Patriot Invite mark which she had set during the morning prelims. The next day, Sackett swam a 1:51.22 in the 200-free, besting both the UMBC and meet record. She also anchored the winning 800-free relay team which lowered UMBC’s 11-year-old record to 7:34.75 and also set a new meet mark, and she was a part of the third-place 200-medley relay, which lowered the school record to 1:47.67. On the final day of competition, Sackett won both the 1,650-free and the 100-free, and shattered the school’s 16-year-old mile record by almost 12 seconds with a time of 16:47.07. She was also part of the winning 400-free relay which set a new UMBC and Patriot Invite record with a time of 3:29.02. The previous school record had stood since 1994.
Burgie won the one meter and three meter events against Holy Cross. Scored 209.7 points in the one meter and 194.53 in the three meter.
Dege was the top diver in both the one-meter and three-meter dive events against Vermont. She scored 260.48 in the one-meter and 235.80. She broke the school record in the one-meter and qualified for NCAA regional zone championships. She was also the top diver in the one-meter and three-meter versus Boston College with a 250.80 in the one-meter and a 252.98 in the three-meter.
