Binghamton's Katie Brody (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) and Stony Brook's Morgan Sweany (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley) share the final Player of the Week award of the season, while Brianna Strong (Elkhart, Ind./Concord) of Binghamton earns her third Rookie of the Week accolade of the 2005 campaign. Binghamton's Ashley Meffert (Louisville, Ky./Fern Creek) also takes home her third Setter of the Week honor of the year. The awards were announced Monday (November 14).
Brody earns her second award of the year as she averaged team-highs of 5.50 kills and 6.50 points per game, while hitting .315 this past week. She had a match- and career-highs 22 kills and 26 points in the win over UMBC. She also had 12 digs, three blocks and a pair of service aces in the match. She helped the Bearcats improve from 7-7 in the conference last year to 10-2 this season.
Sweany receives her fourth such award of the season as she led the Seawolves in a must-win game on Friday night. She recorded a double-double with 17 kills and 22 to lift Stony Brook to a 3-1 win over Maine and clinch the fourth and final spot in the America East Tournament. On Sunday, in a 3-0 loss to Maine, Sweany recorded her second double-double of the week with 10 kills and 13 digs. Sweany averaged 3.86 kills per game over the weekend and rattled off 29 points. The sophomore outside hitter also pitched in 5.00 digs per game.
Strong averaged 4.00 kills, 4.75 points, 3.00 digs and 0.75 aces per game, while hitting .244 this past week. She amassed season-highs of 16 kills and three aces in the win over UMBC. She also contributed 12 digs in the match.
This past week Meffert averaged 14.00 assists, 3.25 digs and 0.75 blocks as the Bearcats concluded their regular season. On Sunday against UMBC, Meffert passed 56 assists, one shy of her season high which was in a five game match. She also added 13 digs, three blocks and an ace in the win.
