Stony Brook University’s Rob Fucci (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter’s College) and UMBC’s Manuel Mariel (Dallas Texas/Lake Highlands) were named America East Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively. The awards were announced Monday (October 31).
Fucci had an outstanding offensive week, tallying three goals in a 1-1 week for the Seawolves. On Wednesday at No. 4 Duke, he scored his first goal of the season to tie the game at one. On Sunday, he scored Stony Brook’s first two goals to wipe out a 2-0 deficit in a come-from-behind overtime victory at Maine. That win gave the Seawolves their second-straight 10-win season, a first round bye in the America East Championship and kept the team alive in its quest for a regular season championship, which will be decided on Wednesday at UMBC.
Mariel scored the game-winning goal in the 55th minute in UMBC’s 3-0 win at Boston University on Saturday. It was his third goal of the year and second game winner, having posted the game winning goal and the game’s first goal in UMBC’s league opener vs. Albany. He scored an unassisted goal from 11 yards out, beating Boston University netminder Chad Comroe in an accumulating snowstorm at Nickerson Field.
