Maine's Shannan Fotter (Riverside, Calif./Lakenheath) has been named America East Player of the Week, while UMBC's Sarah Ball (Winnipeg, Canada/Sisler) earns her fourth America East Rookie of the Week honor. Shelly Seipp (Spokane, Wash./John R. Rogers) of Maine and Ashley Meffert (Louisville, Ky./Fern Creek) of Binghamton share this week's Setter of the Week accolade. The awards were announced on Monday (October 3).
Fotter totaled 24 kills in both America East matches this weekend in helping to lead Maine to a 2-0 record. She had a match-high 15 kills and added three blocks in the Black Bears’ 3-0 sweep of UMBC on Sunday. In addition to her three blocks against the Retrievers, Fotter also had four versus New Hampshire, as Maine pulled off the 3-0 sweep in that match as well. Fotter leads the team in hitting percentage (.309), kills (156), and is second in blocks with 25.
Ball tallied 4.30 kills per game in three matches last week, adding 1.60 digs per game and five total blocks for a 5.00 point per game average. The rookie outside hitter extended her double-digit kills streak to all 12 matches to open the season. Ball opened the week with 16 kills and 17.5 points against George Washington. Ball matched that performance with 16 kills and 18.0 points at home against Binghamton. Ball finished the week with 11 kills and 14.5 points against Maine. Ball on the week hit .164 with 43 kills on 140 total attacks, making 20 errors. Ball also tallied four service aces on the week. For the season Ball is averaging 4.02 kpg, 4,70 ppg and 2.64 dpg.
Seipp totaled 79 assists over the weekend in helping lead Maine to a pair of 3-0 sweeps. She had 37 versus New Hampshire Friday and totaled 42 against UMBC Sunday. Seipp had six digs, two block assists and two service aces against UMBC, while recording a solo block Friday against the Wildcats. She leads the team with 499 assists and is averaging 10.62 per game.
Meffert was a vital part of the Bearcat lineup this past week as the team went 2-1, including 2-0 in conference play. In the three matches, She led the team with 12.27 assists per game and was second on the team with 2.27 digs per game. On Friday against UMBC, Meffert had a career-high of 49 assists in a three game match. She also had a team-high 12 digs in that match.
