Maine Earns Three Women's Soccer Yearly Honors

University of Maine's Marie-Andree Canuel (Midfield of the Year), Linda Consolante (Defender of the Year) and Jasmine Phillips (Goalkeeper of the Year) highlighted the honorees at the conference's annual women's soccer awards banquet on Thursday night. Boston University's Meghann Cook and head coach Nancy Feldman were also tabbed as Striker of the Year and Coach of the Year, respectively, while University of New Hampshire's Sara Hourihan nabbed Rookie of the Year accolades. All voting was conducted by the head coaches at the America East institutions.

Canuel, last season's Rookie of the Year and first team selection, started all 17 regular season games for the Black Bears and has collected a team-high 21 points. Her nine goals lead Maine and place her fourth in America East.

Consolante has been selected to a post-season team each of her four seasons played. She leads the Black Bear defense and has also scored three goals this season. In 17 games, the Maine defense has allowed just 53 shots.

Despite seeing action in just eight games during the regular season, Phillips did enough in her short time to impress the league coaches. Phillips has been stellar in net as she has allowed only one goal in her 710:57 minutes played this season, leading the league in shutouts per game (0.75) and a goals against average of 0.13 per game.

Cook, one of only two players on the all-conference teams to have earned all-conference honors in each of her four seasons, has started all 80 games since first putting on a Terrier uniform. She enters the semifinals of the America East Championship with 79 points, good for second in school history. Her nine goals this season also puts her in the Terrier record book at seventh.

Head coach Nancy Feldman has guided Boston University to its fourth regular season crown as the Terriers posted an unbeaten 7-0-1 record in league play, while going 11-4-4 overall. Feldman's squad is the top seed and will host at least the first round and semifinals of the upcoming America East Championship on October 28 and 30.

Hourihan, a forward, has scored 11 goals and two assists in 17 games and is Wildcats' leader and second in America East with 24 points. Hourihan is also second in the league is game winning goals with four and was honored as America East Rookie of the Week three times during the 2005 campaign.

Cook is joined at forward on the all-conference first team by senior Amy Cochran of University of Vermont and sophomore Jessica Young of UMBC. Cochran has nine goals and seven assists for 25 points and a league-leading 1.47 points per game. Young has tallied 25 points as well, on 12 goals and one assist, as she is the conference's top goal scorer.

Canuel is joined in the midfield on the first team by sophomore teammate Marie-Michele Bouchard, Boston U. junior Lauren Erwin and senior Brooke Bingham. Bouchard has started all 17 games, tallying three assists, while Erwin has three goals and three assists for nine points. Bingham has three assists.

First team defender Consolante in joined on the league's top team by Meghan Taylor, a senior from Binghamton, and Brittany McDonald, a senior from Boston University. Both Taylor and McDonald are repeat selections from last season. Phillips is the first-team goalkeeper.

The second team consists of senior Melissa Shulman of Boston University and Maine seniors Erin Corey and Heather Hathorn at forward. Shulman has six goals and two assists for 14 points. Corey has seven goals and six assists, while Hathorn has seven goals and two assists.

The second team midfielders are Binghamton's Kelly Burnham and Trisha Reed, University of Hartford's Erin Mucha and New Hampshire's Amanda Wiggins.

Boston University's Susan Marschall, New Hampshire's Caitlyn Serafine and Hartford's Kellie Leyland are the second team defenders. Freshman Catie Bukowski of UMBC, who ranks third in America East with saves per game, is the second-team goalkeeper.

Honorable mention choices include Uju Ogbuawa of Albany, Kristie Bowers of Binghamton, Erica Lee of Boston University, Kacey Busque of Hartford, Natalie Berry of Maine, Amanda DiCarlo of UMBC, Adriana Gonzalez-Medina of New Hampshire, Krista Shilts of Stony Brook and Jamie Koehnlein of Vermont.

The all-rookie team is made up of Leyland, Bukowski and Hourihan, Kim Thomas of Binghamton, Marisha Schumacher-Hodge of Boston University, Ashley LoCasale of Boston University, Kacey Busque of Hartford, Christine LaBella of Maine, Michelle Sheehan of New Hampshire, Brooke Barbuto of Stony Brook and Emilie Rowe of Vermont.
