Northeastern junior Jose Juan Barea and New Hampshire senior center Ben Sturgill share America East Player of the Week honors. Northeastern forward Shawn James is the America East Rookie of the Week for the third time this season. The awards were announced Monday (January 31).
Barea (Mayaguez, Puerto Rico/Miami Christian) was the only Husky in double figures with 25 points in the 65-56 win over Stony Brook Wednesday. He added five assists and four rebounds in that game. He followed that with 17 points, eight assists and three rebounds in a 69-59 win at Binghamton Sunday.
Sturgill (Hamilton, Ohio/Hamilton), still playing with his jaw wired shut due to a broken jaw suffered in practice in the first week of January, had his fourth double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds in a 73-64 win over UMBC Saturday. He also had 18 points in a 79-63 loss at Boston University Wednesday.
James (Brooklyn, N.Y./Redirection/Notre Dame Prep) scored 14 points, pulled down five rebounds and blocked six shots in the 69-59 win at Binghamton Sunday. Included in the total was his 68th block of the season which broker the single-season school record of 67 set by Reggie Lewis in 1985-86. James set the record in his 13th game while it took Lewis 30 games to establish the mark.
