Truax, Hicks Earn Cross Country Weekly Honors

New Hampshire’s Anthony Truax (Dover, N.H.) and Northeastern’s Amy Hicks (Pomfret, Conn./Woodstock Academy) have been named the America East Men’s and Women’s Cross Country performers of the week, respectively. The awards were announced Tuesday (September 28).

Truax, a junior at UNH, finished 15th out of 187 runners at the Iona Meet of Champions making him the first Wildcat runner to cross the finish line. Truax has also earned himself a second and third place finish in the other meets UNH has competed in thus far.

Hicks, a junior at Northeastern, has been the top runner for the women’s team the past three meets. She finished second at the Quinnipiac Invitational with a time of 19:11. Her second-place finish played a critical role in the Huskies edge of Quinnipiac (48-49). Hicks was the top America East finisher.

Northeastern Women Win Quinnipiac Invitational
The Huskies cross country team took first out of 13 teams, narrowly clipping host Quinnipiac (48-49) at the QU Invitational on Friday afternoon. Northeastern had five top 20 finishers, led by junior Amy Hicks (Pomfret, Conn./Woodstock Academy) who took home a second place finish with a time of 19:11. Emily Watson (Groton, Conn./Fitch) and Stephanie Morrison (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) also finished in the top 10, placing sixth and ninth with a times of 19:25 and 19:30 respectively (Results).

The University of Hartford finished 10th with a team total of 269 points. The Hawks top finisher was senior Becky Mcveigh (Manchester, Conn./East Catholic), who placed 47th with a time of 21:09.

?Around the Conference in Women’s Cross Country: In America East action, Maine and New Hampshire competed in a dual meet, with UNH coming out on top, defeating the Black Bears 21-35. Maine’s Shelby Howe (Columbia, Maine) won the race, but the Wildcats had six of the next seven runners cross the finish line. Kristen Meisner (Nashua, N.H.) was New Hampshire’s top runner, finishing second. (Results).

Elsewhere in America East women’s cross country, Boston University had five women place in the top 50 at the Iona Meet of Champions at Van Cortlandt Park (Results). The Terriers finished sixth overall with 122 points at the meets end. The strong effort by the Terriers was headed by freshman Andrea Walkonen (Jaffrey, N.H.) who finished fifth overall at a mark of 21:41.

Binghamton University and UMBC took the course at the Lehigh Paul Short Run on Saturday afternoon, with Binghamton placing 12th and UMBC finishing 20th in the 26-team competition. Bearcat’s junior Erica Angell (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Speckenkill) continued her superb start to the 2004 cross country season, placing 20th out of 175 runners. Stacy Kramer (Loudonville, N.Y./ Colonie Central) also had an impressive meet, finishing 39th. UMBC’s top finisher was Stefanie Thomas (Springfield, Pa./Springfield), who took 44th on the 5K course (Results).

?Men’s Cross Country Action:
Despite Maine junior Joshua Trevino’s (Rochester, N.H.) first place finish, New Hampshire defeated Maine 20-41 in men’s America East action on Saturday (Results). Trevino led the field with a time of 26:10. However, New Hampshire dominated the top 10, placing eight of the next nine runners, including second- and third-place finishes by Robert Edgerton (Cornish, N.H.) and Brandon Williams (Manchester, N.H.), who finished with times of 26:19 and 26:26 respectively.

New Hampshire also competed at Iona Meet of Champions, along with Boston University. New Hampshire finished 10th out of 19 with 229 points, while Boston U. tied for 11th place with 331 (Results). The top two finishers for the Wildcats were junior Anthony Truax (Dover, N.H.) clocking in at 25:37 (15th place) and sophomore Peter Hewins (Richboro, Pa.) following less than a minute later with a time of 26:22 (45th place). Finishing ahead of all other Terriers was freshman Jake LaRoe (Sugarloaf, N.Y.) with a time of 26:38, good for 55th overall.

Elsewhere in America East men’s cross country, Northeastern placed seventh out of 13 teams with 215 points, while Hartford finished 12th with 270 points at the Quinnipiac Invitational (Results). Freshman Tom Brown (Holden, Mass./Wachusett) was the first Husky Finisher (18th in 27:20) over the 5-mile course. For Hartford, Freshman Dennis Roche (Springfield, Mass.) led the men’s team for the third straight race, finishing 26th overall with a time of 27:40.

UMBC and Binghamton competed at the Lehigh Paul Short Run on Saturday afternoon. UMBC placed 19th out of 24 teams with 551 points, while Binghamton finished in 23rd place with 645 team points (Results). Shawn Shockry (Florham Park, N.J./Hanover Park) was UMBC’s top finisher in 88th with a time of 25:41. Izudin Mehmedovic (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) was the Retrievers’ next top runner at 25:58. Prahlad Genung (Afton, N.Y.) was Binghamton’s first to finish, with a time of 26:29, good for 113th place.
